A wiseman once told me that when your child turns eight, that is what they will be like when they get older. I have put a lot of time into teaching my son about life skills and hygiene for obvious reasons. These are skills that are needed to be done more than once a day. When it comes to my son I like to try to make cleaning up fun, educational or one or the other. Here are some ideas on what I have been doing, done or did. * Washing hands after using the toilet is a big one for me. Since toilet training and getting him to wash his hands even if he didn't go, he now knows that he has to wash his hands afterwards and does this now on his own. * I let him start brushing his teeth when he was able to hold a tooth brush. The earlier the better. Brushed my teeth along with him and watched as he tried to copy my every move. * When packing up his toys I get him to count them as he puts them back into the toy box, only to find he tips them out and starts going through all the different colours of the toys. This would have originated from the learning to talk or read section where I got him to count every night before going to bed and in the morning before he can watch TV. * I can't remember excactly how I got him to put his dishes up on the bench, but I believe it was more set by example. He has been doing it since he started walking. Other people who stay with us, even visitors automatically pack up after they have eaten here so he followed suit. * He cleans up his room and a mess if he makes one, either on command or without having to be asked. On the rare occassion he refuses to do so. This is another follow by example. He see's me and mum cleaning up all the time in which case he offers to help and tends to exceed expectations. He's going to be just like his mother I can see it now. DOH! * Teaching them to clean up after themselves no matter where they are will make them feel needed and they should be congradulated everytime, even if they make a mistake. At least they tried. Even at a place like MacDonalds or KFC (Takeaway Outlets) the same should happen there. This shows them no matter where they are, or where they go, they have to leave it clean after they use it. There are different ways to make cleaning up fun, because I still find cleaning up fun now and again, even more fun when I'm teaching my son something new. |
