Dramatis Personae
Mabel Stanley, the General's youngest daughter (Kristy
McNichol)
Our heroine, Mabel (also without a 'k'). Major-General Stanley's youngest. The body is an 8, but the brain is a 10.
Here's a lengthy bio from the press kit.
Frederic, a pirate apprentice (Christopher
Atkins)
Ah, Frederic (without a 'k'). The slave to duty with an unusual birth date.
You swoon, you sigh, you probably had pictures of Christopher Atkins on your wall. Go check out my links page for more info.
The press kit has a bio for Christpher too.
The Pirate King (Ted Hamilton)
Though not quite up on his nautical lingo, the Pirate King is a respected leader and confident ladies' man. He's true to his heart and demands complete loyalty from his men. In the opening he is the presenter with the bandana and moustache.
This was not the first time Ted Hamilton commanded a ship and crew. He was the captian of the Love Boat in the pilot episode. Oh to think what could have been. More recently he was appeared in episode #1 of "Mission Impossible '88" and have been told he is now an active businessman. From what I can find, he is now primarily a jazz artist and does public speaking. He was recently seen in Guinevere Jones.
Ruth, a piratical maid-of-all-work (Maggie
Kirkpatrick)

"Plain old Ruth" takes care of her captain and crew. She finally finds happiness at the end. In the beginning you can catch her briefly as a fellow tourist on board the ship.
Maggie Kirkpatrick is probably best known for her work on "Prisoner: Cell Block H" from 1982-1986. For more information check out her official site.
From the press kit (1982): Maggie Kirkpatrick, appearing as Ruth, the pirate apprentice's nurse, is a well-known comedic actress in Austrailia. Most of her professional career, which began when she moved to Sydney from her home in Newcastle in 1961, has been on stage which continues as her first love in the entertainment field. She has also appeared in a number of Austrailian television series and films, including Bruce Beresford's "The Getting of Wisdom."
Major-General Stanley (Bill Kerr)
After giving the modern Mabel free ice cream at the marina, he is captured in her dream as the Major-General, her father. Having lost the family treasures to the pirates years ago, Stanley has taken to drinking and making life difficult for his butler Meadows. He prefers to stay in the background with the exception of his big number.
The career of Australian born Bill Kerr has spanned six decades.
From the press kit (1982): Bill Kerr, who portrays Mabel's father, the major-general, performed on stage and in radio and films in Austrailia from early childhood until we went to England in 1947. There he worked extensively in radio, television, films and theatre. He appeared in the enormously popular "Carry On" movie series, as well as "The Dam Busters" and "You Know What Sailors Are" which was directed by "The Pirate Movie" director, Ken Annakin. He returned to Australia in 1979 and since then has, among other things, had a major supporting role in the Paramount release "Gallipoli," which earned him two Australian Film Award nominations as Best Supporting Actor.
Sergeant of Police/Inspector (Garry
McDonald)
Our pirate exhibition ticket-taker becomes the head of local police in Mabel's dream. Not the bravest of men, he does get a Stanley daughter for the wedding.
Garry McDonald has had a great and lengthy career in his native Australia. Highlights include "Aunty Jack" and later his own show. Garry was made an inaugural board member of the National Depression Initiative in 2000 and made his directorial debut for "Stones In His Pockets" at the Sydney Theatre Company. He appears as The Doctor (one of the bohemians) in Baz Luhrman's Moulin Rouge! (He's the one with the beard)

From the press kit (1982): Garry McDonald, who plays the police sergeant, is a leading comic actor in Australia. He became a major national figure when in the mid-1970s he created the character of Norman Gunston, around which a number of television series have been built. Gunston is an incredibly inept interviewer and reported and, in this guise, McDonald has questioned a variety of internationally(sic) personalities, ranging from Warren Beatty to Billy Carter. McDonald recently co-starred in Peter Weir's acclaimed Austalian feature, "Picnic at Hanging Rock." He is a graduate of the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney.
Samuel (Chuck
McKinney)
Member of the Hot City Bump Band, an Australian soul/funk band. Later played with John Farnham.
From the press kit (1982): Chuck McKinney, who plays the pirate Samuel, began his acting career in Chicago and, later, the New York Stage productions of "Hair," eventually directing the show during its world tour. Emigrating from his native Chicago to Austrailia eleven years ago, McKinney has become of that country's few successful black entertainers. He is popular singer and nightclub performer as well as an actor and is credited with soul sound in Australia with his band, "Hot City."
Dwarf Pirate (Marc
Colombani)
Kate Stanley (Rhonda
Burchmore)
It appears that Rhonda Burchmore's career has taken off in the past few years. There is no mention of The Pirate Movie in her resume though.
Edith Stanley (Kate Ferguson)
As the eldest of the Stanely daughters at 23(?), she's first in line
to marry. Her insistance of the order of marriage is just one of the
barriers to the union of Frederic and Mabel.
Isabel Stanley (Cathrine
Lynch)
Aphrodite Stanley (Linda
Nagle)
Chinese captain (John
Allansu)
The poor Irish Tenor that becomes a soprano after a sword accident.
