| Oliver Payne (2033) [ENG]: | |||||||||||||||

| Oliver is a player from the Ben Purton school of thought; a draw against a higher rated player, or with the black pieces, can never be a bad thing. He only played three games for Slough 2 last season, all on the last weekend, scoring 50%. He does not quite appear to have Ben Purton's knack for safely neutralising his opponents, preferring instead to simply accept a slight disadvantage, all the while popping his head up to exchange pieces. Your webmaster once played a competitive game against Oliver, some years ago in a British Championship, and can safely report that this style has been with him for some time (I secured a draw despite a rating disadvantage amounting to roughly 240 ELO points)... His first game was a long slog against Raymond Sayers (2145) of Poisoned Pawns 2, in which, following a particularly unenterprising French Defence, Sayers consistently overplayed his hand, first allowing Payne to equalise, and then slowly take over. Sayers reached a roughly level position before inexplicably dropping a pawn for nothing. The game still ended up drawn, with Oliver missing a handful of chances in a tricky bishop ending, so in some senses, it was job done. His next game, however, turned into an effective demolition job by Andrew Greet (2282), when as early as move two, Payne accepted doubled isolated pawns to secure the trade of queens! The stronger player asserted himself very well here, and produces a game that seems effortless. Unfortunately we don't have his last round game against Roger Hardy (2022) of Bristol 2, a win with the white pieces, but we will be happy to display it when it comes through. Postscript, 25/06/03 - At the recent Michelle Alfred Memorial Tournament, your webmaster met up with Oliver, who expressed his "sincere disagreement" with some of the comments above. Indeed, he went on to score an excellent 6/9 (=3rd), containing only two draws (less than myself, I might add) and, to add icing on the cake, beating your webmaster in the penultimate round. A copy of this game, annotated by the winner, should reach my desk shortly, as a grovelling apology to Mr.Payne. |
