Fun in Canmore and Surrounding Area

Over the last year I have been living in the town of Canmore, Alberta in the Canadian Rockies. As I have little in the way of vehicles or money my experiences in the Rockies have been totally confined to this area. I would like to get further away from Canmore from time to time, but it is not a big problem. There is no shortage of fun to be had around here.

Scrambles

If you would like to learn about scrambling then go here.
Here are some of the scrambles I have been on
Mountain Description
Lady MacDonald This one is very easy to get to and is "the default" if I do not have much time. I normally just go to the abandoned tea house just above the tree line. The false summit is pretty easy to get to and features a nice view off to the south and east. From the false summit the intrepid can take a trip along a knife-edge with a drop-off on either side.
Ha Ling A very easy ascent with a nice view of Canmore at the summit. There always seem to be gobs of people heading up Ha Ling
Shark The view off of Shark is beyond incredible and our group did not encounter another soul during the entire trip. According to the register not many people go up there. There are quite a few fun, easy, climby portions. Rocks tend to fall from above though and I wished I had a helmet with me.
Big Sister I got way off route on this one and alternated between taking the Slog From Hell and fearing for my life. I never did make it to the summit as I ran out of time. There was the start of a lovely view at the down-climb (where I turned around).
East End Of Rundle (EEOR) Comes right after Ha Ling in order of ease. A groomed trail leads up to a very nice view. Just watch for Paths To Nowhere on the way down.
Grotto Grotto is very easy if you can stay on route. There is supposed to be a nice trail leading up from the ACC Clubhouse but the few times I have gone up it I have gone up a ridge on the north-west part of the mountain. There is a switch-back system of sorts going up the ridge most of the way. The view off the back of the mountain is quite something. It can be a long trip but it is well worth it.
Panorama Ridge I went up this one with an ACC group. It was another nice, easy one (though a couple of our companions might disagree). The view at the top of the ridge was quite beautiful for about two min until we found ourselves in the clouds.
Galatea There is a phenomenal view at the top and a bit of climbing fun to be had near the top but by the time I got there I was not able to enjoy it fully. The trip up is a slog beyond any slog I have been on before or since. Almost the entire trip was on big, hunky horror-scree. Well worth doing though...once.

Biking

There are a huge number of trails for those with mountain bikes in the area. I am not one of these people, I own a hybrid. The hybrid does limit where I can and cannot go I still have quite a few biking opportunities open to me.
