Rev. Christian Streit, was second only to Henry Muhlenburg in establishing the Lutheran Church in what became the United States.

Educated at Princeton under Rev. Muhlenburg, CHRISTIAN STREIT (Johann Leonhard, Christianus, Johann Leonhardt, Johannes),received his bachelor of arts degree from what is now the University of Pennsylvania in 1768, and his master's degree in 1771 from the same institution.  He was ordained to the ministry on October 25, 1770, in Reading, Penn., becoming the first American-born Lutheran minister.  After his ordination, Christian became pastor at Easton , Penn., where he served a congregation for nearly ten years.
When the War for American Independence broke out, he was commissioned Chaplain of the 8th Virginia Regiment under Col. Abraham Bowman in Gen. Peter Muhlenberg's Brigade, serving from May 1, 1776, through July 5, 1777.
When the Continental Army retired to Valley Forge, he was petitioned to become pastor of St . John's Church in Charleston, South Carolina.
When the War reached the outskirts of Charleston, he became chaplain of the 9th Virginia Regiment.
He was taken prisoner in Charleston, and was held as a hostage until exchanged in 1782.
After his release by British forces, and after the death of his first wife, he was persuaded to become pastor of the congregation at New Hanover, Penn., where he served for three years.
In 1785, Rev. Streit took charge of the first Lutheran Church in Winchester, Virginia.
Christian officiated in Winchester until his death, March 10, 1812.

"Frederick County, Virginia" Settlement and Some First Families of Back Creek Valley, 1730-1830; Wilmr L. Kerns, Ph.D.: Page 555 - "Streit Family of Green Spring - The Streit surname was well-know in Frederick county during the 18th and 19th centuries. Persons who have conducted genealogical research in the county marriage records have no doubt encountered the name of the Reverend Christian Streit (1748-1812). Streit, who pastored the Lutheran Church in Winchester and preached across the rural landscape, was known as the first Lutheran pastor who was born on American soil. also, Streit's journal has been preserved by the archives Division of Handley Library in Winchester. There is no record of Rev. Streit preaching at the Old Stone Church at Green Spring. the Warm springs that was cited in his journal is located in Berkeley Springs, Morgan County, West virginia."

"Another Streit family appeared during the early 1800s in the green spring and White Hall section of Frederick County. These people were Methodists, but were later affiliated with the United brethren in Christ, which is now merged into the United Methodist Church. Charles Streit (1782-1825) was a son of William Streit of Bedford County, Pennsylvania. It is believed, but not proven, that Charles Streit and the Rev. Christian Streit belonged to the same family root, going back to earlier generations in New York or New Jersey."
