Sailors
Using a boat was part of a Viking's daily life. It was hard to get about overland, across mountains or through forests or deep snow. The simplest way was to use the rivers and coasts. Most Viking towns were on a river or inlet. The Vikings were the most skillful sailors of the north. They did not fear the open sea and sailed far to find new lands.

Ships
Viking Ships are among the finest ever built. The longship was a swift graceful boat. The front and back was carved in the form of wild animals. The sails were large and square, usually striped and colourful. Each longship had a set of oars and could be rowed along in calm weather.
The Vikings had boats for all purposes, from small river boats to ocean-going cargo ships. They were most feared for their warships. These were long thin, square-sailed boats holding up to sixty warrior oarsmen. The Viking warriors hung their shields over the sides. The ships were made to ride the stormy seas on which the Vikings sailed.

At a Glance
Vikings had no compasses. When they were out of sight of land sailors judged where they were from the position of  the sun or  the stars.
