CLOTHINAND  JEWELLERY

The Vikings were proud of their appearance and liked to show off their wealth with fine clothing and jewellery. The material was usually made of wool or linen. It was woven by the women and dyed into attractive colours. More expensive materials like silk could be bought from the merchants.

Men wore trousers which were held up by a sash or a drawstring. On top they wore a straight tunic with a belt. In winter heavy cloaks would be worn over the tunic. Shoes or ankle boots were made of leather.
Viking women wore long linen dresses. These could be either plain or pleated. Over the dress they wore a long woolen tunic like an apron. It was held up by a pair of brooches. Over the tunic they could wear a cloak or shawl.
Both men and women wore jewellery.

Viking Dress

For a Viking, lots of gold rings and armbands was like money. Goods could be paid for with jewellery or coins.

Women carried things they needed- keys, comb, knife, scissors- on chains hanging from a brooch.
