Summer

Summer in Davis is hot, with maximum temperatures in the 90's and 100's F. These temperatures are characteristic of the Sacramento Valley of California in summer. Daytime temperatures can remain hot for weeks at a time. Practically all buildings have air conditioning to make the summers livable for the population. On some summer evenings, however, a cooling breeze enters Davis from the west. A wind develops through a break in the coast mountain range - through the San Francisco Bay and Carquinez Straits continuing along the Delta Region and central valley. Therefore, many summer evenings in Davis are cool and refreshing. People open their windows at night to catch the cooling breeze, a "natural air conditioning."

There is very little precipitation in summer, which is favorable for crops such as tomatoes and cherries. Instead, crops are irrigated. A rain shower in Davis in the summer is unusual, and it is of generally short duration with low total precipitation. Daylight extends to around 8 to 9 p.m. in summer, which is ideal for outside sports activities such as bicycling, baseball, and skateboarding. The air can become hazy when there is no wind. A high level of auto exhaust creates smog. Davis is rated a high air pollution area of California
