Monday: Edenton, 9 mi

Today we meet up with our touring group, and when we went to breakfast at the hotel there were a few couples eating there that would  be joining us on the Carolina Tailwinds tour. We sat down with some folks we had ridden the
Wine Tour with the previous year and got caught up on things as we ate.  After breakfast Susan and I loaded up and biked the few miles to our B&B, The Lords Proprietors' Inn, for the night and to finally get started on our bike vacation with Carolina Tailwinds.  Today was an optional 30 miler for folks arriving in time for the 1:00 start, but we decided to take a rest day.  As others rode we went exploring downtown.  Edenton isnt too big but I found a library while Susan was able to buy some stuff to be shipped.  Visa and UPS are her favorite biking accessories.

With shopping over we started riding around the outskirts of town.  We found the historic district and again enjoyed riding through the old neighborhoods looking at the historical homes.  After cruising the streets we stopped at a local coffee shop before heading back to our B&B.  The day was topped off with a great meal which is one the trademarks of biking trips.
The first of many great meals together
Tuesday: Manteo, 30 mi

The day started with a shuttle that took us over the 32 bridge that we had biked over Sunday.  Seeing it from the perspective of an automobile it did not look quite so challenging, but I was still glad to be starting from the other side.  Todays ride was through North Carolina coastal farmland.  The day was beautiful and we enjoyed the scenery as we rode with the wind at our backs.  We stopped to make a few turtle saves and even managed to do it without crashing into each other.  As we rode along we discovered some even stranger animal life as we rounded a curve and saw a pasture with buffalo in it.  We stopped and watch as one buffalo lay on the ground while three goats played king on the mountain on his back.  As we watched the buffaloes we noticed, in a connecting pasture, three ostriches running up the fence line to come look at us.  As we rode off we soon made another discovery.  We were making a long sweeping U-turn.  Our tailwind was beginning to become a headwind.

The last ten miles or so to Columbia, NC was much more demanding as we battled the wind to our destination.  There was a lunch waiting at the end so that spurred us on.  Susan and I also needed to make reservations for the last day of tour with Carolina Tailwinds and the beginning of our bike trip back to the truck.  The last day with Carolina we would bike back through Columbia and this is where we would leave the Tailwind group and start back on our own.  We found a B&B, the Brick House Inn, and got squared away soon enough and got back with our group for lunch.  After lunch we were shuttled the rest of the way into Manteo to the White Doe B&B, our home for the next two nights.  It didnt take us long to get settled in and to hit the streets.  Manteo was full of little shops and junk stores and Susan quickly found one that said her two favorite words, we ship.   After shopping we found her next favorite passion, and that was a coffee shop.  With both her addictions finally soothed we walked back to the Inn for a quick nap before supper.  The day again was ended with a great meal.
