In these independent and busy times "Soup's On" provides a unique opportunity for the neighborhood to get together, prepare and share a nutritious meal. Attendance is based not only on a hunger for food but also a hunger for community. Our meal is served at one large family style table.
Local entertainers share their talents throughout the lunch hour. Many school children come with friends to meet up with family and partake partake of the delicious fare.

Supper Program

Thanks to The County of Lanark for the assistance with funding for expansion of Soup's On lunch program to include a Community PotLuck Supper once each month. The supper is held at St John the Evangelist Anglican Church, in the hall. * The First Wednesday Of Every Month* was chosen because people usually have some money or food at this time and are in a more comfortable position to participate and share in a potluck. Colorful aprons are given as prizes each month to the top three, healthiest, yummiest supper dishes. Youth cooking gets priority when it comes to judging. The goal of the program is to encourage healthy cooking as well as healthy eating habits. It is also our hope that working families will find this program to be a viable alternative to fast food supper plans. In the end it is our hope to provide stress relief and some quality family time in the evening at least once a month. Beverages and fresh fruit are provided and there is no charge for the supper.

In partnership with the Anglican church members we served Thanksgiving Supper October 13th. The Record News reported 75 in attendance but the final count was 198. The church will be providing Thanksgiving Supper again next year and we will be there to help. A final note on the Supper Program: There is music. Our friend Roscoe has gotten on the band wagon so be prepared for Karaoke.
See you at supper time.

The Work Crew
Providing a volunteer labor force working in partnership with other non-profit and community organizations

The work crew is truly the back bone of Skills & Initiatives Projects. From one end of the town to the other you will see our crew pitching in. Many of our volunteers spent months working closely with the Town crew to paint, build, repair, demolish, restore, clean, mow, rake, plant or what ever else a project demanded. We started by sweeping the streets clean this spring and never looked back.

Affordable Housing
Through partnerships with other agencies working to improve affordable housing conditions in the local area.

Through partnership with Frontiers Foundation and working with the community of Almonte and surrounding area, Skills & Initiatives has been assisting in the building of a comfortable home for individuals who were living in very poor conditions. Recent newspaper articles attest to the positive changes that have occurred in the individual lives as a result of this project. The spirit of the project has affected many people and has greatly increased a sense of community for those who have become involved.

Computer Refurbishing/Recycling
Rebuilding donated computers to provide affordable, student friendly computers to local families living on limited incomes.

Dental Care For All
Creating access to dental care for the adult low-income earner

Dental Care For All is a program designed to promote awareness of the dental condition of adults living on low income. Currently there is no dental help available or programs in place to help. We are very aware that having decayed teeth and pain are deterring factors to good self esteem and employability. D.C.F.A. is attempting to increase awareness among local policy-makers and the public about the impact of dental disease on the most vulnerable sector of society. We are requesting "in-kind" help form dentists, denturists and health professionals in Lanark County. Thanks to National Child Tax Reinvestment Funding, The County of Lanark for their financial support. Thanks also to Brockville health unit for bi-monthly dental hygienist visitations and for toothbrushes and dental information. Thanks to all health professionals that have, thus far, contributed to the success of this program.
