Nugent Abell started his working life with D. & W. Murray - a large soft goods wholesale firm. He enlisted for the First World War in the 15th Battalion A.I.F. and was taken Prisoner at Bullecourt early in 1917. He was posted 'missing' for twelve months. During this period he did not receive any P.O.W. parcels or any mail, and had to make one shirt last the year. His total imprisonment lasted a year and nine months and included the notorious Black Hole of Lille, where prisoners were confined in a relatively small brick and concrete room without any boards for sleeping for the first few days. As it was during winter and the prisoners carried into the prison snow on their boots they could not lie down until some boards were given to them.
