THOMAS KNILL ABELL
Not a lot is known about 'Uncle Tom'. He was reputed to have been a clever young man but wine, women and horses ruined his chances of a successful career. He was very fond of animals and managed them with ease. He could drive a coach and four with skill. In August 1933 Hamlyn Brier stayed with him at Park Cottage, Guisborough, near Middlesborough in Yorkshire. It was the caretaker's cottage of an estate with a large though vacant Hall.
He was married but who Auntie Minnie was is not known and there was no family. It appears that he was only three years old when his mother died and it is said that his step-mother was very unkind to him in his young days.Thomas married Minnie. 517 F v Clara Ann Abell was born on 14 Nov 1854 in The Cottage, No.2 Grove Place, Grove Lane, Camberwell, Surrey, England. She died on 24 Sep 1923 in The Planes, Upton, Cheshire, England.
She had no children by either husband.Clara married (1) Coude Michelle Martin son of Hamilton Duckworth Martin. Coude died on 11 Nov 1895. He was buried in Nunhead Cemetery,London,London,England. Clara married (2) Frederick H. Garland. Frederick died on 8 Mar 1933 in The Planes,Upton,Cheshire,England. 518 F vi Emily Garland Abell was born on 21 Jun 1856 in The Cottage, No.2 Grove Place, Grove Lane, Camberwell, Surrey, England. She died on 22 Oct 1856 in 17 Linden Grove, Nunhead, London, England. She was buried on 31 Oct 1856 in Nunhead Cemetery, London, London, England.
314. Thomas Knill Abell (Thomas Abell , Mary Derry , Nathaniel Derry , Thomas Derry , John Derry or Dirry , Thomas ) was born in Cookhorn Farm, The White House, Little Cowarne, Herefordshire, England. He was christened on 22 Jul 1814 in Stoke Lacy, Herefordshire, England. He died on 10 Jun 1898 in Boonah, Queensland, Australia. He was buried on 11 Jun 1898 in Teviotville General Cemetery, Teviotville, Boonah, Queensland, Australia.
per Ham. Bier book on Abells, he emigrated to Australia in 1869 with his children, his wife apparently having died.
The family sailed from England for Australia in the Ship ' Young Australia ' (767 tons) 12th April, 1869 arriving in Moreton Bay 12th July, 1869. Thomas Abell had been a malster but at the time of his marriage he was a commission agent. On arriving in Queensland he commenced farming at Redbank Plains growing Cotton, Later moving to Roadvale on 80 acres ( near Ipswich ). He died in 1908 and was buried in Teviotville General Cemetery.
