Basic Small Engine Maintenance
Summary:
4. Fresh Oil.

(2 cycle engines, such as used on most weed eaters, blowers, and Lawn Boy mowers, get their lubrication from their fuel-oil mixture, so this section only applies to 4 cycle motors such as used on many lawn mowers and tractors.)

Drain and replace the oil:

  • After 25 hours of use in harsh environments
  • Or at least once a season. The small engine may have an oil drain plug which has a square head; some have a square hole that is unscrewed with a ratchet (no socket), others may require tipping the engine to one side to drain from the same hole that the oil is added.

Follow the owner's manual's directions for draining and adding the correct type and quantity of oil. Straight 30w may be acceptable for many applications.

Always check the oil level before starting!
