Basic Small Engine Maintenance
Summary:
3. Fresh Spark Plug.

After Fresh Gas and Fresh Air, if the small engine refuses to start, head to the spark plug.

Change the spark plug:

  • If the engine is hard to start or won't start.
  • At least once a season.

While one can clean and regap a spark plug, there may be other unresolvable problems with it such as invisible cracks in the ceramic allowing spark to "leak" to ground; in short, it's just not worth the effort to fiddle with a well used spark plug.   Simply replace it!

    Gapping the Plug:
The "gap" is the space between the center electrode and the bent, adjustable electrode on the side of the plug. Place the feeler gauge in the gap; the fit should be firm, not tight or loose.
Use the gap specified in the owner's manual.
