Radiation Therapist are health care profession skilled in �ART AND SCIENCE� of Medical Radiation treatment delivery to restore, improve, enhance performance, and facilate adaptation to the diagnosis of malignant diseases and to promote and maintain health

The majority of the patient receiving radiation therapy has cancer so the major focus areas of the profession are

  • Primary care of the patient

  • Simulation

  • Treatment

  • Planning

  • Delivery of the treatment

  • Aim of the treatment includes cure, relief of symptom and improvement of patient quality of life. The RTT must have excellent technical skill, but must also be empathic and effective communicator. In short RTT is �Technology with Human Touch�. The essential function of the profession includes:

  • Being essential member of the radiation oncology team he/she should ensure and take care of the total quality care of each patient undergoing a prescribed course of treatment by :

  • a) Communicating effectively and proficiently with the patient, their families and other member of the radiation oncology team both orally and written

    b) Being physically, intellectually and emotionally able to respond to emergency situation providing first aid, CPR, and other patient care until physician or nurse arrives.

    c) Capable of handling stressful situation and giving emotional support to the patient and their families.

    d) Monitor patient and its sound during treatment.

    e) Documenting accurately and legibly treatment set up and dose calculation.

  • Evaluating and assessing treatment delivery component:

  • a) Performing mechanical and morning check quality assurance and quality control checks.

    b) Observing monitors and scale to note divergence from expected reading.

    c) Detecting equipment malfunctioning and taking appropriate action.

  • Evaluate and asses daily physiological and psychological responsiveness of each patient by communicating, listening of concern and observation of side effect of the patient as well as families.

  • Use good judgment when to refer patient for its side effect to Radiation oncologist.

  • Provide effective patient education for each patient for all the procedure he/she has to undergo.

  • a) Maintain professional code of ethic.

    b) Maintain and follow departmental standards and procedure regarding treatment delivery and patient care.

    c) Respect and maintain confidentiality of each patient.

    d) Maintain professional appearance at all the time.

    e) Respect other and personal integrity regardless of Race, colour, religion, sex, age, sexual preference or disability.
