Staind - Tormented (1996) Reviewed on 2/13/05

Eh...

Nation: USA

Album Genre: Stoner Metal/Rock, Post-Grunge

Pros: Their best tune would probably be the song "Painful." Some of the other tunes have moments where the vocals sound halfway inspired. And then there is the song "Mudshuvel" which could have easily been adopted as an Alice in Chains album filler. The type of sound on that song is almost identical to that of AiC. However, it is probably the most memorable tune on the this album.

Cons: This is not the Staind we are all used to hearing on MTV that is for sure. This is a Staind that is obviously influenced from the bands Corrosion of Conformity, Alice in Chains and Kyuss, as well as early Nu-Metal like Korn. However, that doesn't make it good as opposed to their counterparts. This is bland, uninspired music, simple as that. Every song is repetitive in nature and doesn't offer anything catchy or inspiring to keep on listening. The vocals are a blatant rip off of John Garcia's style (Kyuss and Unida), and the instrumental section is reminiscent of Body Count's slower/drudgier tune. Staind had some great influential artists in their sound, but they are just a third rate version of the late and greats they hope to mimick.
