Sonata Arctica - Reckoning Night (2004) Reviewed on 2/20/05

Good

Nation: Finland

Album Genre: Power Metal

Pros: This is a heavier side to Sonata. They are straying from the giddy power metal they personified so well, and have moved into a realm of more traditional metal, which is fine, but it is just not the same as their previous releases. Positively, Sonata is still making their trademark music, regardless if they have slightly skewed their path they normally take, and I can respect any band that can maintain their basic sound while experimenting, props to the boys for doing that. The rockers on this album are definitely the standout tracks (which is interesting, because the three previous albums had standout ballad tracks). This is a decent album, and it is definitely listenable.

Cons: Less keyboard work (which is key to Sonata's success), alot less catchy, terrible ballads....It's just not up to Sonata Arctica's standards, simple as that. For those who are new to Sonata, start out with Ecliptica or Silence.
