Korn - Take a Look in the Mirror (2004) Reviewed on 1/10/05

Eh...

Nation: United States

Album Genre: Nu-Metal

Pros: Korn really surmount on their tried and true method of slap bass hard rock. This is a tried and true method that is their sound that they more or less hold as their own. And while this style does get stale after 4 or 5 album, they do still have some stand out tracks that get the head a movin. For example the opening track "Right Now" is catchy, and the deceptively un-radio friendly tune (meaning if you ignore the lyrics, could easily be a radio hit) "Here It Comes Again" is a good subtle melodic tune where Jon's vocals are actually quite good. "Did My Time" is another decent melodic driven track that is pretty good. "Play Me" has some good rapping on it, that isn't the same shitty modern rap nowadays which is just dandy to me (the chorus and the Davis interludes suck however).

Cons: My God, Korn is REALLY running out of fucking ideas. They have been singing about the same personal problems from their first album to their latest, Take a Look in the Mirror. From the bad songs, to the good songs, the lyrics are complete drivel. Jonathan Davis is WAY beyond his teen angst stage, now writing slop that gets him the most bank (which the angsty kids of nowaday can spend their allowances on). These lyrics, and the same suffering vocals done painstakingly from album to album are just way too subscribed. Korn, while sticking to their tried and true sound is good, needs to take on a new ideology to appeal to their aging fanbase. Korn is one of the founders of their genre and because of that they have mainstay capabilities (that and their selling out from left to right), but they are slowly aging and wearing thin. Untouchable felt this hurt, and luckily for Korn, they found some of their original sound in this album.

Jonathan...quit chasing the bank and focus on the music. Use what you have learned and develop new techniques to help make your sound bigger and better. Expand your damn horizons.

Oh, and "Y'All Want a Single" is a terrible song!
