Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden (1980) Reviewed on 12/6/04

Vewy Good

Nation: United Kingdom

Album Genre: Traditional Metal/NWOBHM

Pros: An absolute staple in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, and an absolutel staple in heavy metal as a genre. This is the album that started a living legend in musical history, regardless of what genre you are examining. Iron Maiden took their punk roots to a whole new level by adopting the fun atmosphere of punk with the brooding seriousness of Judas Priest driven heavy metal of the era. Iron Maiden defined the word guitar aficonado in heavy metal with this album and really continued to blaze through the competition in the same whirlwind as Judas Priest during the early 80's

Cons: I used to think Paul Di'Anno's vocals gave this album life, but after several listens, I really think that Paul's vocals really inhibit this album from the greatness it could have achieved. Paul sounds like and has admitted to being more of a punk vocalist, and that is plainly obvious on this album. There are a few songs that Paul excells at, like "Charlotte the Harlot and "Iron Maiden." Paul begins to develop better on Maiden's follow up album "Killers."

Mandatory Ownage

Nation: United Kingdom

Album Genre: Traditional Metal/NWOBHM

Pros: "Flight of Icarus"..."The Trooper"..."Die WIth Your Boots On", these are just a few songs that are often considered common everyday Maiden songs, which they are, but they became common songs because they are GREAT songs. This album, along with the majority of their early works, really defined what metal was to be in the 80's. 'Piece of Mind' and the rest of Maiden's early to mid 80's records set a standard for the quality of what hard rock and metal was to be played at from then on and continues to be the standard.

Cons: None

Eh...

Nation: United Kingdom

Genre: Traditional Metal/NWOBHM

Pros: "The Clansman" is required listening and an absolute epic for any true fan of Maiden. "Don't Look to the Eyes of A Stranger" is also a standout track on an otherwise poor album. On these songs, Blaze really shows what he has.

Cons: The songwriting on this album is sub par from Maiden's standards. The choruses are repeated very often, the overall lyrical quality is down, and the riffs are also repetitive (yes, we are talking about a Maiden album...). Everyone always says Blaze brought the quality of the album down, but I think Blaze is a great vocalist who was unfortunately stuck on one of Maiden's worst albums.
