Ayreon - The Final Experiment (1995) Reviewed on 12/11/04 |
Amazingly... Nation: The Netherlands Album Genre: Progressive Metal Pros: The simple fact if the matter is, Ayreon is the best progressive rock entity known to man. Dream Theater in the late 80's really defined what modern progressive metal should sound like, but their formula (while sounding great, and working for them) still stuck to the basic ideology behind rock and metal. Arjen Lucassen, founder of Ayreon, took this idea a step forward and completely made it epic by adding in album after album of operatic inspired progressive metal that not only instituted traditional heavy metal instruments, but allowed in brass, folk and symphonic string instruments (among others) to help enrich the sound. And after an intricate process of finding voices for his many characters, Arjen created a world of his own that just completely and utterly absorbs me. There is no other form of music that has captured me like Arjen's has, and I have heard lots. Arjen's almost decade long journey started in 1995 with "The Final Experiment." Arjen himself, coming from a traditional hard rock/metal background, knew he was taking a chance with this project and had no idea how it would be viewed by the public. Honestly, how could you go wrong with this sound? It is absolutely fabulous! Cons: Nothing...and I mean nothing. |
