Atreyu - The Curse (2004) Reviewed on 1/3/05

Vewy Good

Nation: United States

Album Genre: Emocore/Metalcore

Pros: What do you get when you put annoying nasally vocals, generic riffs, and lame uninspired acoustic numbers with relationship lyrics? You get the run of the mill emo band. Now, what do you get when you put thoughtful melodies, variation in riff technique, some creative aggression, harsh AND clean vocals representing emotion, and even mainstream accessible choruses combined with relationship lyrics? You get ATREYU. These guys are not the best metalcore band on the planet, but they are the best band that dares to play emo. You know why? It's because they play it their own way. They don't subscribe to the generic paint by numbers approach that bands like Yellowcard and The Used take. Atreyu are risk takers in their genre, and their hard work in the underground is finally paying off after helping lead the charge in the revived New Wave of American Heavy Metal movement. Fuck metal purists, and fuck pop/emo purists...this band adopts both in a winning way that will keep them in the scene for along time as long as they don't SELL OUT which bands like them have a tendency to do.

Cons: Keep on kickin it boys!
