A New Found Glory - Catalyst (2004) Reviewed on 1/15/05

Eh...

Nation: United States

Album Genre: Pop Punk

Pros: As a pop album, this is not bearable, not bad at all...simple as that. It has catchy choruses and bubble gum riffs that allow all the girlies to swoon over the lead vox. The problem is...that's all it is, and it is very watered down. I am not entirely familiar with this band, but I get the feeling they are trying to expand their sound. For instance, there are some songs that just....suck ass....yeah, that's about as kind as I can make the blow. HOWEVER, there ARE tunes on here that really make my ears perk up and make the point of convincing me that these blokes have the talent and creativity to really make an effort to either create effective pop music (aka The Police, not necessarily with the same sound, but with the same drive and originality in the mainstream), or VERY effective punk rock music (the intro blew me away...it kicks ass!). These guys need to take the clothespins off of their noses, mature out of this bubblegum quasi rock music and really bust it down in either a creative pop rock direction, or a punk direction....or hell, even straight up rock! A New Found Glory can see it, and in a few years I really can see these guys abandoning this mainstream sound and moving into something that is perhaps not as easily accessible to the teeny bopper crowd, but will get the reviews of being QUALITY MUSIC.

Cons: The nasally vocals I cannot fucking stand. Absolutely abysmal! People...this is NOT punk, and it is quickly losing it's trendiness in the pop world. This fad needs to die, leaving the men to figure out whether or not they want to become a big boy punk band where they can have some credibility, or a pop band. This genre bending stuff MUST end. A prime example of shittiness..."Truth of My Youth" and the attempt at a thoughtful ballad in "I Don't Wanna Know." Both of these are the epitome of what I HATE about pop punk and emo. Standard plastic paint by numbers mediocrity in music. These guys have the talent to either show us pop music, or show us true rock music...enough of the mediocre attempts to reach the money grubbing 16 year olds by applying superglue to the insides of their noses and squeezing.
