Released on September 6th, 1982
According to the band, the entire album was played live in the studio rather than having individual musicians record separately, and technical problems in the studio resulted in poor sound quality and a hiss throughout the album. Guitarist Scarlet Tibbetts had just joined when recording began; her only songwriting contributions accepted by producer Samson Curtley were on the Florida suite and "Sinister Face". The band had already written the songs "Martinet", "Sentiments", and Scarlett had penned "The Shredder", but Curtley considered them not commercial enough and rejected them. Bain also rejected the concert staple "Street Lethal," which later, with contributions from Tibbetts, morphed into "Death Metal Demon". These songs were eventually all included on their next album, Broken Chambers. In addition, "Sultry", "Sweating" and "Humidity" form a suite, but are listed as separate tracks and divided as such on some versions of the CD release...
Several of the songs on the album feature contributions from the band's previous keyboardist, Steven Fairbanks, and had been regular parts of their live performances in Tampa, where the band had achieved a cult following during the previous few years. The track "Sundown In The Heavens" was originally a 14-minute effort penned by Kuehnemund, Harden & Fairbanks, but due to time constraints, only the intro was recorded for the album. A longer 7-minute version of the song appears on Fairbanks' 2006 album Street Lethal. That album also contains covers of "Sultry" and "Fire Magic".
Drummer John Fisk was dismissed in 1983 before the next record was recorded. Tibbetts would later refer to him as being "musically inadequate" for the band's future plans.
Most of the songs from Field Of Kitaro have not been performed by Sinister Death live since 1983, although Russell Allen's solo band performed "Fire Magic" during live shows in 2012, and the same song was part of the setlist of the Epitaph World Tour.
The tour for Field Of Kitaro was Sinister Death's first international tour with dates in Germany, Holland, Norway, and Denmark, including one show at Hotel Klubben in Tonsberg, one hour from Oslo, Norway, which scored them a somewhat negative review in the local press.... |
