Simona! The Romanian team also qualified for Tuesday's Team Final in second place behind Russia (154.874) with a score of 153.991.

The Romanian team completed their final rotations and waited for the Russians and Chinese teams to compete for the top 3 places. Before their final rotations were finished, it became clear that the Romanians had a unasailable lead and had won the gold medal with a score of 154.608. Simona gave a strong performance with a 9.762 on the beam and a 9.775 on the floor. A great team effort. Congratulations to Romania!
Simona will contest Thursday's All-around final. The Atlanta quadruple medalist is positioned 3rd for the Sydney Olympics after qualifying. Her strongest apparatus is the vault where she owns the 1995 and 1997 titles and on the floor where she blitzed the Sydney field with a 9.800 qualifier.

Simona Amanar was awarded the gold medal after teammate Andreea Raducan tested positive to a banned substance apparently the result of harmless cold medicine administered earlier. Maria Olaru was elevated to the silver medal, while Xuan Liu was given the bronze. Simona recorded the following scores on each apparatus:
Floor: 9.812
The favourite, Svetlana Khorkina of Russia, experienced difficulty on a number of apparatus including her strongest - the uneven bars. She finished in 11th place.

Simona Amanar became a triple medalist at the 2000 Sydney Olympics when she captured a bronze medal on the floor with an impressive routine. The Atlanta 1996 star could not defend her gold medal apparatus - the vault - ending the competition in 6th place. Nevertheless, Simona leaves Sydney with 3 medals having created many memories and winning even more hearts.
The drug scandal which dominated gymnastics news throughout the Sydney Olympics continued after the competition with Simona's teammate Andreea Raducan being stripped of her All-around gold medal. Raducan's appeal against the decision was lost. The team later returned to Bucharest, Romania to a hero's welcome: photos.
