Concert review:
Coheed and Cambria
Next Review
When:November 11,2005
where:Metropolis,montreal
Opening acts:Me without you,dredg,blood brothers
Coheed and Cambria is unquestionnably the most inventive and original rock band around today. All their albums are concept albums and recount the story of two characters, named Coheed and Cambria. The band has been described as the next Rush, the next Yes,and they've even been compared to Pink Floyd.Sure, lead vocalist Claudio Sanchez really does sound like Rush's Geddy Lee,but Coheed and Cambria should not be compared to any other band, because they are absolutely unique. After first listening to their latest album,"Good Appollo I'm burning star 4.Volume 1:from fear through the eyes of madness"(talk about a long title!!)I was curious to find out how they would be live. The album was a little over the top, with  voices of giggling children incorporated into the music, added on to Sanchez' high-pitched vocal style made for a unique listening. The night started off with a weak performance from "me without you" a pretty dull band that looks like it was made up of a bunch of bums off downtown montreal. The lead singer wore a tuque,a winter coat, and complained about a girl who broke up with him a while back, who happened to go to montreal's own Concordia university. Then Dredg took the stage, the music was very dreamy, complete with creative use of maraccas and a slide guitar. The last opener was heavy metal band the blood brothers. The crowd loved them,I couldn't stand them. The music was not melodic, the songs all sounded alike, and the lead singer basically just yelled into a microphone. Finally, around ten o'clock,Coheed finally took the stage.Red lights loomed across the metropolis as Sanchez took the stage,an impressive sight with his enormous hair and double-necked red guitar. They started off with the slow "Always and never",followed by their newest single"Welcome Home".The crowd went nuts, moshing to the melodic beat  and singing along. The rest of the night was full of great, pure rock. The wailing guitar solos made me want to stay there forever,it was like I went back in time. This band truly sounds like they should've been around in the 70's.If only I didn't have to wait so long for them to hit the stage, this concert would've been awesome.
