Learning to Solve Problems with Technology
A Constructivist Perspective

By David H. Jonassen and Jane Howland
Chapter 8: Learning in problem-Based Learning Environments
PBLEs (problem-based learning environments) are prepackaged materials. Some of these environments provide multiple spaces for student constructions and contributions others student cannot manipulate or change. There are story problems used for math and science courses from 1st grade through graduate school. The tutorials help students with the solution of the problem with detailed information, and graphics. The feedback for an incorrect answer is presented in a way that reflects student's errors and gives them another chance to solve the same problem again. However, some people argue that this tutorial instruction is not constructivist, but tutorials remain a good approach to teach problem-solving. Another interesting example of PBLEs is the ChemLab where students perform laboratory experiments, take notes, make observations, and take measurements. The advantage of this is the avoidance of dangers in conducting laboratory experiments but the only thing that is missing is the smells. The Astronomy Village developed by NASA is a very interesting multimedia project, where students can choose an investigation for a list given, develop a plan, get the information using the medium, complete the investigation and present to their class and other astronomers about their findings. This multimedia is self-contained and all the information is store in it, like pictures, sounds, interviews, researches, also a communication center to exchange information, among other features. The Nardoo is an imaginary river in Australia for the study of biology, geography, social science and media studies. Students can study the interactions between living organisms and the physical and chemical environment in which they operate; perform some investigations; like sample the river at any point. Also it provides simulators, where students can learn about water usage. The Voyages of the Mimi is another PBLEs that combines video, software, and print materials that helps the study of whales, the lost Mayan city among other activities.
