Letters
and More
So, what was wrong with the last picture?
That’s right, although Eggman is playing, Sonic’s picture and name can clearly
be seen. (Another answer is that Sonic has 33 lives—who has 33 lives
at Angel Island unless they’ve already played the game? In this case
I have beaten the game and playing it again, so I won’t take out the first
3.)
Let’s think about the Sonic icon first. How can we get an Eggman Icon?
Well, there is a box with his picture in Ice Cap Zone and in Launch Base
Zone. Let’s get take a screenshot of that and be right back.
(I went to Ice Cap Zone Act 2 and went below the ground to find it.)
Now, using the skills you’ve already learned, isolate the picture of Eggman
with just the border of black around it so it looks like:
Compare this with the Sonic box:
The boxes are the same except for a couple of things. Eggman has a
green background and four extra pixels. These four extra pixels are
actually the black border to the left and right. Let’s get rid of the
left and right border by painting the sides white.
How will we change the background to Sonic’s shade of white? One possible
way is to zoom in on the background. Select a small area of the background
and then copy the selection. Paste this into Eggman’s box, use the
Pick Color tool to select the new shade of white, and then use the Fill with
Color tool to replace the green with white. When you’re done, the final
result should look like this:
Now let’s get this into the final picture. Luckily, since Eggman’s
box has the same dimensions as Sonic’s box, we don’t have to erase Sonic’s
box. Copy the Eggman box and paste it directly over Sonic’s box.
So we’ve got Eggman’s picture,
now we need his name. There is only enough space for five characters
(i.e. letters). Eggman’s name is six characters long. But what
about Knuckles? Remember, Knuckles’s name is recorded as K T E, not
Knuckles. We can do this for Eggman as well, but instead of doing initials,
let’s just do the word “EGG” instead.
When letters are involved in hoaxes, it’s best to use letters that have already
been established in the game. For example, we can get an E by taking
it from Knuckles’s K T E abbreviation.
But what about the letter G? We could take a letter from the word “Rings”
up above, but then the letter would be too big. We could try and shrink
the letter, but then the letter would become distorted. The solution
is to take a similar looking letter and edit it into a G. For this
we will use the C from Sonic’s name.
Let’s get started. You’ve already got the C from Screen 1, so start
a game as Knuckles and take a screenshot of a stage. Select the E and
paste it into a new document called Letters. Copy the C from Sonic’s
name and paste it into the Letters file. The colors may be different
depending on where you took the letter, as in this example:
Use the Pick Color and Fill with
Color tools to change the E to the same colors of the C. In this case,
you use the shadow from the C to change the color of the shadow for the E.
Okay, now it’s time to change the C to a G. It’s a good idea to copy
the G from the word RINGS paste it into the document as an example.
Zoom in to 800% and study the differences between the E and the C.
The C is a little bit smaller width-wise, so you’ll have to add a couple
of pixels to the length. Continue to create the G to the best of your
ability. It won’t look much like a G with the white background, but
it will look better once it’s on the final picture. Now make a copy
of the G and place it close to the first G. Move the two Gs closer
to the E to spell EGG.
