What will I need to make a hoax?

There are a few things you need before you get started on your hoax:

A program to take screenshots – There are two different ways to obtain screenshots (three if you can get images directly from a console--in theory).
    •    A PC copy of the game.  You can take a screenshot by pressing the “Print Screen” on your computer (this will not work for all games).  Also check the instruction manual, F9 is another possibility; this was used in Sonic & Knuckles Collection.
    •    An emulator.  Check the readme file to find out which key will take a screenshot.  Some emulators will allow you to assign a key especially for screenshots.  It goes with out saying you will also need a ROM (i.e. a file) of the game you have in mind.

A program to edit screenshots – The important key here is to use an imaging or photo editing program you’re comfortable with.  I use Paint because 1.)  It’s free and 2.) It’s easy to use.  For more complex hoaxes, you may need something more advanced than Paint.  The examples that follow will use Paint as the editing program.

Good observation skills – You’ll need to remember the basics of the game so that you don’t make any major mistakes.  The point is to create a picture that looks like it could happen in a real game.  The more hoaxes you create, the better you will become at observing pixels.
