Although Robotnik has done his best to destroy Mobius, the Floating Island remains untouched. This island floats thanks to the power of a Chaos Emerald. Knuckles the Echidna is the guardian of the island and is the last of his race. It is only a matter of time before the Floating Island is no longer safe from the war.

"Panic in the Sky!"

Prologue:
Some Mobians enjoy playing on the beach until a large shadow covers them.

Part I:
Rotor points to a monitor and says that a land mass is heading for Knothole. Sonic suddenly appears and recognizes the mass as the Floating Island. Sally asks for an explanation, so Sonic recalls the time that he went with Tails and met Knuckles the Echidna. Although they parted on friendly terms, Sonic is not sure if he can trust Knuckles. Sally orders Antoine to fly Sonic and Tails in the Turbo-Prop to look at the island.

Soon Antoine approaches the island. Cannons appear from the bottom of the island and start to fire at the plane. Sonic tells Antoine to return to the base and then parachutes to the ground. Tails flies to the ground and asks Sonic what they're supposed to look for. Sonic says he doesn't know, but he'll know when they find it. A shadow watches Sonic and Tails walk, recognizing them from before.

Sonic and Tails find a forest filled with giant mushrooms. Something hits Sonic on the head, and Sonic sees the mushrooms as they plan to eat Sonic. Sonic shakes his head, and Tails explains that a pendulum hit him on the head. Sonic grabs the pendulum and makes his way to the tops of the mushrooms. As Sonic runs across the mushrooms, a robot appears with an ax. Sonic destroys the robot and then continues to run on the ground. Suddenly the ground caves in, and Sonic finds himself grabbing on to a ledge. A shadow appears and asks if Sonic missed him.

Part II:
Knuckles is mad at Sonic for trespassing and steps on Sonic's fingers. Tails drops a rock at Knuckles, who leans forward to avoid getting hit. Sonic and Knuckles fall into the hole and land on a rock surrounded by lava. Tails flies down and carries Sonic and Knuckles to the surface. Knuckles is thankful and upset at the intruders. Sonic has Knuckles look at the sky and Knuckles realizes that something is wrong. Sonic says that they're probably over Knothole and then informs Knuckles of the guns that are attached to the bottom of the island. Knuckles is upset and has Sonic and Tails follow him down a chute leading to the Chaos Chamber.

Knuckles explains that the Chaos Chamber is a crystal cavern that houses the Chaos Emerald and transfers the energy to keep the Floating Island in the sky. He then notices an energy syphon which is taking energy away from the emerald. Knuckles tries to touch it and gets shocked. Robotnik's face appears and then explains how he managed to tunnel into the island and make the Floating Island a floating fortress. Robotnik says that he used the power from the emerald to move the island toward Knothole. Soon Knothole will be destroyed.

Robotnik thanks Knuckles for distracting Sonic and Tails. Knuckles is upset and picks up the Chaos Emerald. He smashes the emerald into pieces. Now the Floating Island will fall to the ground. Robotnik escapes from the underside of the island and laughs, knowing that the Floating Island was eight miles above Knothole. Once Knuckles knows that Robotnik is gone, he pulls out a Chaos Emerald. Knuckles puts the Chaos Emerald to its place, and the island stops falling.

Soon afterwards Knuckles says that he'll think before jumping to conclusions. Sonic says that Knuckles made an honest mistake. Tails notes that Knuckles was lucky to have a spare emerald. Knuckles says that he didn't have a spare emerald and that he smashed a fake emerald. Sonic says he didn't see Knuckles switch the emeralds. He then asks Knuckles to join him and Knuckles declines. Tails picks up Sonic and flies him back to Knothole. Sally asks if Knuckles will join the freedom fighters, and Sonic responds that Knuckles will be on his own.

"Fire Drill"

Knuckles sees an explosion and heads toward the beach to check it out. There are footprints that lead from the crater, so Knuckles follows them to a bush. Knuckles is confident that someone is there and pounces on the bushes. Once everything settles down, Knuckles realizes nobody is there. The only place where the person could have gone is Sandopolis Zone, so Knuckles quickly glides to the zone. Knuckles is confident that it is Sonic and yells for Sonic to face him. When there is no response, Knuckles enters a building. Suddenly rocks fall, and Knuckles tries to avoid them. Knuckles continues to walk and is nearly sliced by an ax. He continues to walk and finds a door. After going inside, Knuckles is confused and wishes his father had told him more about the island. Sand begins to fall, and Knuckles blindly makes his way to a ledge. In order to escape, he breaks the wall. Footprints lead from the wall to the edge of the island. Knuckles figures that the only way to go was down, so he must be rid of Sonic for now. Someone in the shadows thinks that Knuckles has a lot to learn and his lessons will now begin.

"Lord of the Floating Island"

The winds are blowing hard as Knuckles tries to glide. Knuckles spots a baby kangaroo and swoops down to pick him up. The kangaroo squirms so Knuckles decides to walk. Knuckles introduces himself to the kangaroo. The kangaroo says his mom told him that Knuckles watches over everyone. Pointing at the sky, the kangaroo asks Knuckles to bring the sky back. Knuckles explains that it's just an illusion; the moon has aligned itself between the sun and the island. Knuckles also says that things recently have changed and glides to a tree to avoid being trampled by dingoes, which are upset by the weather. The kangaroo is worried, but Knuckles tells him not to worry since there's nothing to worry about on the island. The wind gets stronger and the kangaroo clings on to Knuckles. Knuckles says that it's the final part before the moon moves, and the sun begins to shine again. The wind is still, and the kangaroo's mother appears. Knuckles says he lives to "protect and serve."

Knuckles will be back in the next 48-page special: Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble. Also, there will be a 48-page special called Knuckles Chaotix in November 1995. Knuckles will have solo stories in Sonic the Hedgehog #31-33 and then have a mini series in January 1996. And Sonic the Hedgehog #25 will be on sale in two weeks.
