(Introduction page)
Knuckles loves his parents, no matter how complicated their relationship.  Now Knuckles is ready to save his mother from harm.

The Chaotix are taking things easy, still waiting for word from Knuckles.  A tremor knocks everyone to the ground, and the Chaotix know that it is getting closer.  Meanwhile, Knuckles and Archimedes appear in a room close to Lara-Le and the hostages.  Archimedes tells Knuckles to wait until the dingoes come to them.  One of the dingoes hears a noise, and Jasper is sent to investigate. Knuckles punches Jasper and throws him into another dingo.  As Knuckles attacks a third dingo, one of the hostages named Wynmacher tackles a dingo.  Once the dingoes are unconscious, Lara-Le hugs Knuckles.  Archimedes tells Knuckles that more dingoes are coming.  Soon the dingoes come into the room.  Before they can investigate the room, the dingoes disappear.  Outside, Constable Remington was told that he must return to the base.  Remington turns around and is surprised to see somebody.

Hawking thinks to himself, and suddenly Deo, a fire-ant, appears.  Hawking is pleasantly surprised and explains that he was wrong when he thought that the dingoes were responsible for the fluctuating energy that is destroying the hyper zone barriers.  Suddenly the image of Locke appears on a screen.  Locke explains that their situation is a result of an omega wave that came from Robotropolis (in Sonic the Hedgehog #50).  The wave was responsible for allowing the barriers to break, which was seen when the Dark Legion appeared on the Floating Island (in Knuckles:  The Dark Legion #1).  More evidence of the wave's impact appeared with the tremor in the Marble Zone (from Knuckles #4).  After Echidnaopolis appeared, it was clear that zones are fighting for space in the current zone and only one will survive.

Knuckles explains to Remington that he was unable to rescue the other hostages.  Remington assures Knuckles that it is only a set back as he helps Lara-Le out of the van and escorts everyone to his office.  After sitting in a chair, Knuckles tells Archimedes to find out what is going on.  After Archimedes disappears, Lara-Le remarks that Knuckles has not said a word to her.  Knuckles does not know where to begin; so Lara-Le recalls when Knuckles was born.  She did not know what it meant to be a guardian's wife and felt that she would have a say in how Knuckles was raised.  When Lara-Le realized she could not help raise Knuckles, she knew must either accept the truth or leave. Remington appears in the room and says he heard from Guardian Hawking that there may be a solution. Knuckles knows they need the Hyper Zone Projector, and Remington explains that it is only part of the plan.

Suddenly the echidnas and dingoes are in the same world, and General Stryker says that they will prevail.  In order to draw the attention of the guardians, Stryker orders Field Commander Rat to take their captured echidnas to the town square, dead or alive.  Rat orders everyone to line up against the wall.  One echidna protests and says that they would rather give their lives than submit to Rat.  Rat follows the echidna's wishes and orders his men to fire.

The guns click and the dingoes laugh.  Rat explains that it was just a game, so the echidnas will never know when it will happen for real.  A voice yells that they will now play his favorite game. Knuckles glides toward the dingoes and knocks them to the ground.  Julie-Su fights with one of the dingoes as Knuckles grabs hold of Rat's shirt.  Knuckles demands to know the location of Rat's leader, but Rat refuses to talk.  An echidna says he knows where, so Knuckles punches Rat.  Soon the echidna leads everyone inside a building.  Another tremor sends everyone to the ground, and Julie-Su refuses Knuckles' help.

As everyone runs for shelter, Hawking knows he must take action.  He tells Deo to contact Archimedes and tell him to get everyone to safety.  Archimedes appears in Knuckles' hand and gives him the message.  Knuckles decides to head off to the leader's suite.  Meanwhile, Gerbil tells General Stryker that they must leave.  Stryker prepares himself for battle by putting on his power glove.  Knuckles appears in the room and explains that he is trying to get the echidnas to safety. Stryker refuses to believe Knuckles and starts to fight him.  Knuckles tells Julie-Su to stay back, but she says she can take care of herself.  Knuckles manages to hold Stryker's arms still and yells for the echidnas to leave.  Julie-Su stays as the rescued echidnas make their way to safety.

Hawking tells Remington to order everyone to the bunkers and prepares to take action.  Meanwhile, Stryker and Knuckles are still fighting.  Julie-Su tears a curtain from a window and throws it on Stryker's head.  Knuckles uses a flagpole to hit Stryker over the head and tells him that they need to call a truce if Stryker wants the dingoes to survive.  The echidnas and Lara-Le are escorted to bunkers as the ground begins to shake.  Archimedes appears and transports Knuckles, Julie-Su, and Stryker to a bunker.  Remington is ready to fight Stryker, but Knuckles prevents the two from fighting.  When the tremors stop, everyone leaves the bunkers.  Knuckles sees Catweazle flying in the sky, so he knows that he is on the Floating Island.  Knuckles tells Archimedes that they must check on Hawking.  Archimedes sees his grandfather, Deo Volente, and asks what happened to Hawking.  Deo replies that Hawking's fate is out of his hands.  Deo then shows something that Hawking wanted Knuckles to have.  Knuckles walks inside and sees a brown hat with three stars on it.  Knuckles doesn't understand, and Deo explains that he will someday.  Deo disappears, and Knuckles tries the hat on.

Post Cards from the Hedge of the Floating Island highlights:
~ Steppenwolf is Knuckles' grandfather 16 generations removed
~ Enerjak once controlled the Chaotix with his mind
~ Knuckles knew where Espio was in Knuckles: The Dark Legion #1 probably because of a guardian trade secret
