. "Raised Cod".
These lyrics are from the Chapter 6--Live CD, one of the CDs from the a cappella
men's group, Chapter 6. (If you like a cappella singing, I recommend looking into this group. They are wonderful.) I especially love one
song (a ghost track) called "Raised Cod," a parody of another song they sang on the same CD, "And They Praised God."
This is explanation for the lyric change as on the CD:
"Back, last semester, we went down to St. Louis, and it was the first came we came across an issue where they didn't want us
singing any religious music there. That's happened a couple times since, and we try and be sensitive to that. But the first time it
happened, we tried to figure out what to do. One of the guys in the group said: 'Let's change the words.' We were, like, 'No, that's--nah,
that's ridiculous.' Well, Mark Grizzard heard that idea, and he ran with it. And we'd like to share with you 'Raised Cod.'"
So here are the lyrics to the original song, "And They Praised God" (words and music by Keith Lancaster as performed by Chapter 6)
and the lyrics to the wonderfully funny "Raised Cod." Enjoy. :-)

And They Praised God
*
I sang to the people in Russia
As they were searching for the truth
Their eyes were so cold and empty
From the eldest to the youth
What a privilege I had to carry
The joy of the God we love
And I sang of the Christ, His compassionate life
Of a home He's prepared above
And they praised God (Praised God)
And they praised God (Praised God)
And they praised God because of me
I sang to the people in Africa
Some who didn't have food to eat
In the depths of full-blown poverty
Most were living out in the street
What a thrill to deliver the Gospel
To the people who were so distressed
Holding back the tears and the cultural fears
Overwhelmingly I was impressed
And they praised God (Praised God)
And they praised God (Praised God)
And they praised God instead of me
I sang to the people in my hometown
Very hard trying to guess their mind
Most had already heard the precious Word
Of a God who's good and kind
As I sang I could tell that they knew it
I didn't sing for the joy of the song
But because of a Cross and a Savior's loss
To deliver mankind gone wrong
And they praised God (Praised God)
And they praised God (Praised God)
And they praised God in spite of me
And they praised God (Praised God)
And they praised God (Praised God)
And they praised God instead of me

Raised Cod
*
I fished in the rivers of Africa
And I caught some cod for me
I didn’t want them for dinner
Just for their company
So I took them to the movies
And on walks in the park all day long
They had a place to stay and three meals a day
So they would grow up big and strong
And I raise cod (Raised cod)
And I raise cod (Raised cod)
And I raise cod
They’re my buddies
I fished in the rivers of Russia
And I caught fifteen or so
But my poor little cod were freezing
It was ten degrees below
So I knit them little sweaters
Now no matter how cold it gets
They’ll stay nice and warm and free from harm
‘Cause they’re my favorite kind of pets
And I raise cod (Raised cod)
And I raise cod (Raised cod)
And I raise cod
It was chilly
I fished in the rivers of my hometown
And I brought home four of five
By now I had way too many
To try to keep alive
Left and right my cod kept dying
Now how no matter how hard I tried
I was sad until I could serve them grilled
With tartar sauce on the side
And I raise cod (Raised cod)
And I raise cod (Raised cod)
And I raise cod
They were tasty
