Previously on Buffy the Vampire Slayer:

Where have you been? Anya died. Her unborn child's in Willow now. Grant is the shadowy cop fella. The Sunnydale Police are evil and raised something nasty. Xander's slowly losing it. Spike's leaving. Grant and Buffy discovered they're on the same side and there's some notebook involved. Xander split.

Picking up where the previous episode left off, Buffy and Willow are stunned to find Xander's apartment completely cleared out. Buffy asks the landlord of the building if Xander said where he was going. The landlord says, "Hell if I know." and that Xander just up and left. He also says that he's glad Xander's gone, that he was getting sick of Xander trashing his apartment. The landlord takes a moment to really look at Buffy and Willow and asks if they're looking to share an apartment together. Willow makes it clear that they aren't. They're just trying to find out where Xander went.

Opening Credits.

Buffy and Willow return home. Dawn asks if they found Xander and whether he's alright. Buffy says negative and tells her that Xander cleared out. Willow suggests that maybe Grant could help them find Xander.

Buffy is on patrol with Grant and is about to ask him for his help in finding Xander when he suddenly says, "I think I might have a way of getting the Commissioner to stop focusing on you." Buffy's pleased to hear that but is a little worried about him lying to the Commissioner, "If he ever found out you were covering for me..." she begins but Grant tells her to relax and that he'll take care of it. He asks if she's managed to decipher what's in the notebook yet and Buffy tells him Willow's working on it. On the police radio they hear of disturbance at a local club. Grant doesn't recognise the name of the club (The Bronze) but Buffy says she knows where it is.

They arrive at The Bronze and see people running out screaming. Grant and Buffy flash their badges and tell everyone to stay calm as they enter the club, guns drawn. They find a huge spiney slug-like demon, that appears to be feeding off the brains of a civilian. "Stay calm?" Buffy half asks/half tells Grant as he replies with a delayed, "Uh-huh."

Buffy and Grant emerge from The Bronze, covered in demon blood. Grant says he'll drive Buffy home but just to give him a minute as he catches his breath.

The following day, Grant enters the Commissioner's office and waits for him to get off the phone. Grant reports that Buffy...Officer Summers was injured during the previous night's patrol. The Commissioner's expression is unreadable. Grant continues on that it may be bad enough to take her out of the running for now. After a moment the Commissioner seems to buy the story. Grant has a little sigh of relief. Before he leaves though, the Commissioner states that he will be sending a patrol car around to the Summers residence to check up on Buffy.

A patrol car with Grant and some uniforms pulls up at the Summers house. Grant enters first and tells the others to not make much noise as Buffy's probably resting. Willow's there and wondering what's going on. Grant fills her in as the other cops look around the house. Grant's shooting Willow, "Be careful." glances behind their backs and she picks up on it. "O-oh, Buffy's not here." she tells them, "She's out of town. She's...staying with someone out of town to, you know, to recover from..." She looks to Grant for aid. "The accident last night." he supplies for her. "...Right! The accident, yes. She's staying out of town with someone to recover from the accident." Willow states, with more confidence this time. After some searching, the cops are satisfied. They leave and Grant closes the door as he's last to leave. He shoots Willow a, "Well, that went well." glance as she gives him a nervous look in return and then a scowl once he's gone.

On his break, Grant returns to the Summers house and finds both Willow and Tara working on translating what's in the notebook. He apologises to Willow for putting her on the spot like that but he didn't know the Commissioner would...Willow interrupts and says it's fine but, "Don't ever do that to me again or I'll have to break both your legs, okay?" and gives him a sweet innocent Willow-smile. Grant says okay. He then asks if they've found anything out yet and Tara says there's definitely important info there, they just haven't discovered what exactly it is yet. The door opens and all three of them snap their heads around to find...Dawn.

She asks Willow whether they can trust Grant and Willow says if he's good enough for Buffy to trust, then he's good enough for them. Dawn's still a bit weary of him but perks up when she remembers something in her backpack. She tips out the contents of her backpack onto the table to reveal many chocolate bars and some empty wrappers. Dawn tells them that she has to sell them all for school. Willow makes a point of asking whether it's band candy. Dawn replies, "What's the chance of *that* ever happening again?". Willow just glares. Dawn decides to give up on trying to sell some candy to Willow and instead turns to Grant asking, "Would you like to buy some?".

Buffy's patrolling the graveyard when she hears what sounds like demons. She peeks around a bush to find demons milling about. When she spots Spike, Buffy sighs and confronts him. The demons all gasp at the sight of the Slayer but Spike says she's not there to slay them. "Are you?" he checks with her. "Well...I'm not sure exactly. Should I be? What are they doing here?" she asks. "Rummaging through my old stuff, what does it look like?" Buffy spots the 'For Sale' sign outside his crypt. Spike tells Buffy to wait one moment while he goes and bargains with a demon who seems interested in the crypt. Buffy recognises the demon as Clem and she says, "Hey Clem." and he waves back. Spike notices another demon making off with his Buffykin and he shouts, "Hey! That item's...not for sale at the moment!" Buffy gives Spike a, "And exactly what would you be needing it for?" look. After a moment he let's the demon take it. Once he's sold his crypt to Clem, Spike walks back over to Buffy. She asks him if he's going to have anything left? He tells her that he's sub-letting his apartment to an old demon pal of his and that he's still got his DeSoto as well as his trusty cigarette lighter. He pulls the 'For Sale' sign out of the ground.

Buffy returns home. Grant is gone but Willow fills her in on the success that was their cover story. Buffy sighs with relief saying she won't have to worry about anymore assassination attempts made on her. Willow adds that if Grant's a bit testy when she meets him privately next time, that will be on account of Dawn selling him twenty chocolate bars.

Scene changes to underneath the SPD. The evil entity is being worshipped by some hooded blokes. The Commissioner is also there and he has someone with him. The camera pans around so we can see the other person's face. It's Xander.
