Our Events

Many people ask what exactly is O-Mok-See. Well it is a word taking from the Blackfoot Indians that means "riding big dance." As I have come to find out, that because the Blackfoot had no written language, O-Mok-See has no incorrect spelling just as long as you get the pronunciation right. But for my sanity I spell it the same way every time and I tell anyone who asks how to spell it, O-Mok-See.

At our fair we perform just a fraction of the 37 events that the NSCA offers. We do Texas Barrels (Cloverleaf Race), O-Mok-See Flag Race (Flag Race), Key Pole (Which is just like Key Race but with out the red socks on the poles), Figure Eight Stake Race, Pole Bending, Speed Barrels, Two Barrel Flag Race, California Stake Race (Arena Race), Barrel & Stake and a modified version of Two Barrel Pole Race.

This year we will also have two Jackpot events held on Monday and Wednesday if there are enough riders. They will be Ride-A-Buck and Rescue Race. So if you are interested in riding theses events just come up to me during the show and I will enter you in.

Texas Barrels: Three 55 gallon barrels are set up in a triangle. Barrels 1 & 2 are to be 40 feet from the start/finish line. Barrels 1 & 2 are then set no more then 37.5 feet from center of lane but a minimum of 20 feet from arena fence. The 3rd barrel is then set at 135ft centered in the lane. The rider has the choice of which barrel they wish to go to first, either left or the right. If the rider goes to the left first the will make a left turn around barrel # 1 then head for barrel #2 and make a right turn around that barrel. They then proceed to barrel #3 where the rider will make another right turn. After that they race back to the start/finish line. The other possible sequence is Right, Left, Left. A 5 second penalty will be added for each barrel that is knocked over and a disqualification for a incorrect pattern.

California Stake Race: A single pole is set in the center of the lane at a135 ft from the start/finish line. The rider is to ride down to the pole and make either a left or right turn around it and then ride back to the start/finish line.

Figure 8 Stake Race: Two poles are centered in the lane, one 75ft from the start/finish line and the other 135ft. The rider is to race down either the left or right side of the poles and once reaching the last pole they will make a complete figure 8 pattern which will end them up back at the far pole where they will race back the start/finish line.

O-Mok-See Flag Race: A small flag is placed in a coffee can half full of dirt that is placed on-top of a 55 gallon barrel 135ft from the start/finish line. The rider is to ride down to can and pick-up the flag, then race back to the start/finish line with the flag in hand. Disqualification for not having the flag in hand  when you cross the finish line. A 5 second penalty for knocking over the coffee can and/or the barrel.

Pole Bending: Six poles are to be placed in the center of the lane. The six poles are to be set at measurements 30’, 51’, 72’, 93’, 114’, 135’ from the start/finish line. The rider starts and races to the last pole and makes either a left or right turn and weaves down and back threw the poles and then after turning around the last pole for the second time races back to the start/finish line. A 5  second penalty for every pole knocked over and disqualification for an incorrect pattern.

Speed Barrels: Three 55 gallon barrels are centered in the lane at measurements 35’, 85’ and 135’ from the start/finish line. The rider weaves through and back. The rider has the choice of starting on the left or right side of the barrels. There is a 5 second penalty for each barrel knocked over and a disqualification for an incorrect pattern.

Idaho Two barrel Flags: The course is set up with two 30 gallon barrels centered in the lane with about six inches of dirt in the bottom at 30’ and 135’ from the start/finish line. The rider may choose to start on the left or right side. In each barrel there is a different colored flag. The rider is to take the first flag to the second barrel and the second flag up to the first barrel. There is a 10 second penalty for failing to attempt to exchange the flags along with the standard 5 second penalty for each flag not exchanged.

Key Pole: Two poles are set 135’ from start/finish line 5 feet apart. Two more poles are set 10’ towards the start/finish line. The rider is to ride threw all the poles, turn around and run back threw and across the start/finish line. A 5 second penalty for every pole knocked over and a disqualification for an incorrect patter.

SIF Two Barrel Pole Race: Two 55 gallon barrels are set exactly like barrels #1 & #2 of Texas Barrels. Three poles are then centered in the lane at 93’, 114’ and 135’. The rider is to first race the two barrels just like barrels #1 & #2 in Texas Barrels. They then weave the pole threw and back, then race strait to the finish line. When weaving the poles the rider must go to the far side of the first pole. A 5 second penalty for every event property that is knocked over and a disqualification for an incorrect pattern.

Barrel & Stake Race: Two 30 gallon barrels are centered in the lane at 30’ and 135’. Three flags are placed in the first barrel. The rider is to move all three flags from the first to the second barrel one at a time. This is done in a 3 lap pattern, what ever side the rider chooses to run up they have to come down on the opposite side. A 5 second penalty for every barrel that is knocked over and for every flag that dose not make it into the intended barrel. A disqualification for an incorrect pattern.

The course that we race on is a 135ft single lane course. It is 30ft shorter then standard courses because of arena limitations and safety considerations. If you would like to read more about O-Mok-See please visit the National Saddle Club Association by clicking their link below or any of the NSCA links.
