The History of Sacred Heart, stretching back to the early centuries when Rt. Rev Mgr. Hopfgartner, the founder of the school started the SHS.

The history of SHS are divided into 3 main categories:

1) School under the Catholic mission

2) The De La Salle Brothers era

3) The New Era

I) School Under the Catholic Mission
1902-1908

THE FOUNDER

Rt Rev Mgr HOPFGARTNER
( 5.1.1871-15.5.1919 )

Began in an 'attap' shed situated where the Rejang Port Authority Custom Building now stands.

Enrolment : 15 students.
Moved to Lanang Road in 1905.
Moved again to a 2-storey wooden building in Mission Road in 1907. Highest level: Standard III.
Enrolment : 30 students.

1908-1936 Principal-Rev Fr Vincent Halder.
Highest level (1928): Standard IV (equivalent to Primary 6).
Highest level (1932): Standard VII (Form 3 ).
Enrolment: 300 students.
1937-1938 Principal-Rev Fr John Vos.
1938-1940 Principal- Rev Fr James Buis.
Enrolment (1940) : 400 students.
1941-1946 School closed-Japanese Occupation and World War 2.
1947-1948 Principal- Rev Fr John Dekker.
1948-1950 Principal-Rev Fr William Wagenaar.
Enrolment (1948) : 600 students.
1950-1953 Principal-Rev Fr Adrian de Vos.
Junior Cambridge programme was introduced (1950).
Chinese medium introduced (1953).
SMB St Elizabeth established in 1953.

II) The De La Salle Brothers

1954-1963 Principal-Bro Fridolin Francis Gaughran of de La Salle Brothers.
Cambridge School Certificate introduced in 1955.
A new Sacred Heart Secondary School was opened in 1958 and she became an aided school.
Chinese medium became Catholic High School in 1960.
1963-1971 Principal-Brother Adrian Gaule.
Cambridge Higher School Certificate for Science Stream was introduced in 1965.
School moved to present site at Jalan Oya on 1 June 1967.

Enrolment (1968): 600 students.
1972-1987 Principal-Brother Albinus O' Flaherty.
Extensive renovation works carried out.
Lower 6 Arts was introduced in 1973.
Enrolment (1976): 1100 students.
Double sessions introduced.
Enrolment (1980): 1800 students.

III) The New Era

1987-1993 Principal-Mr. Samuel Tan Yan Pheng.
Malay Language completely became the medium of instruction of the school in 1989.
Construction of 4 storey building in 1989 and completed in July 1990.
Enrolment (1992): 2000 students.
1993-2000 Principal-Mr. Peter Wong Ku Ung.
Construction of a new administrative building in 1995 and a single-storey building for Form 6 classes in 1998.

The completed SHOSA building (front), with the 4 storey, Block 5 building which was initially built in 1990. The SHOSA block now consist of  5 Form 6 classes while the Block 5 building occupies classes from both morning and afternoon session plus a gym at the top floor.

Enrolment (1993) : 2133 students.
2000 & on Principal-Mr. Phillip Chan.
