Welcome to the Connecticut Shoshin Ryu website. Shoshin Ryu is a
national karate/jujitsu organization with affiliations in Alaska, California, Idaho, Minnesota, New
Mexico, and New York. Shoshin Ryu is a martial art that emphasizes
self-defense and personal growth.
Shoshin Ryu's focus is the unencumbered study of the martial
arts. This system strives to be unencumbered by egotism,
monetary gain, or popular trends in martial arts. Shoshin Ryu is a
nonprofit organization. While it is necessary to collect dues to provide
for the financial stability of the organization, we believe that the
benefits of the association are extended in ways that cannot be
measured with money. There are no testing fees or contracts to sign. Shoshin Ryu is a cooperative rather than a
competitive system. We are not sport-oriented in nature, although
individuals may indulge in sparring or randori with other like-minded individuals. Although the system is modern, our training methods
are traditional.
Beginning Shoshin students choose between two emphases for study. Atemi Waza
students primarily study striking and kicking techniques. Nage Waza students
primarily study throwing and grappling techniques. Students cross-train in both
emphases freely, and self-defense requirements are the same for all Shoshin
students. Connecticut has two dojos, one in Willimantic and one in Durham. Both
emphases are taught in each dojo. Connecticut's chief instructor is Sensei Don Soucy. Don is a fourth-degree black belt with over twenty years of experience in the martial arts.
