Mood: calm Fact of the day: Oscar Wilde spent two years in prison for committing "unnatural acts" with Lord Alfred Douglas. event of the week Annual General Meeting of SSA. which I'm going to miss. damn.
A few of us were talking about our secondary school and junior college days last night. Naturally, we went on to bitch about a few people, and marveled over a few others. Like Ruth who's so musically talented yet equally humble and approachable, Timothy who's so incredibly smart yet also humble and very humourous, Cheryl who's so eloqeunt and quick with her tongue (sometimes a little too quick actually) and should have gotten the President Scholarship....so many of these people we all know, perhaps not very personally, but we talk about them like we do. They're like celebrity.
All this time when we were talking about these people, shaun was just listening quietly by the side. [Except once to claim that probably he's seen Timothy before in the army, when Timothy stood up to correct an officer about some chemistry knowledge or something. Heh.] After the whole discussion, he commented that we know too many smart people. Huh?
It's never occured to me that I know that many smart people. But now that I think of it, this is so true. I can already foresee a few of my friends possibly become top-notch lawyers, doctors, or whatever they might choose to do. Somehow, I have a feeling they can make it - logically because they're smart, they learn fast, they're charismatic and blah blah blah.... but it's still just a little hard to imagine where they will be in 20 years' time? How much would they have achieved by then? Man, I've met so many talented people for the past 4 years, and I didn't even realise it.
But I don't quite understand how anybody can know too many smart people. How many is too many? Knowing the top students doesn't necessarily mean that I have ignored the sentiments of the average students, right? I cannot tell if I can claim to know enough of the supposed average students, to be sensitive enough to the differences in their mentality. In fact, now that I think of it, what is the average? Among the smart, everyone is different, so similarly among the average, who can represent everyone else? Nobody.
Oh well, I'm getting all confused myself. If I can, I wish I can get to know all sorts of people. I guess it'll help me have a better guage of what my world is really like, what kind of people actually live around me, but it's practically impossible. From experience, I know some of these people I want to know don't really want to get me know me anyway.
