ROTTWEILERS

The name Rottweiler is derived from the town of its origin, Rottweil, in southern Germany. Although their early history is not documented, the origins of the Rottweiler is believed to date back to ancient Rome. These early descendants of the Rottweiler were used as both herder and protector of livestock used by the traveling Roman army. The Rottweiler's intelligence, strength and speed have given them the reputation of being excellent police and watchdogs.

Males range from 61 to 69 centimetres (24 to 27 inches) in height and weigh 50 kilograms (110 pounds). Females are 56 to 63.5 centimetres (22 to 25 inches) in height and weigh 38.5 kilograms (85 pounds). Rotties have a short dense coat and are black with brown markings.
