Frequently Asked Questions
About Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine

Q:How does acupuncture work?

A:Stimulation of specific points on the body with needles or other means causes the release of various hormones and natural chemicals, which leads to several key benefits:

Pain relief
Enhanced immune function
Regulation of the hormonal and nervous systems
Improved circulation
Increased tissue healing
Relaxation of muscle spasm and increased joint mobility
Reduced stress
Promotion of physiological balance (homeostasis).

Q: Does it hurt?

A:  Most first-time patients are pleased to find that having an acupuncture treatment is a relaxing and pleasant experience. Many people actually fall asleep while the needles are in place!

Acupuncture needles are very thin and flexible - about the diameter of a cat's whisker. Some people feel nothing at all when the needles are inserted; others experience a sensation similar to a mosquito bite, followed by a mild aching or tingling sensation. Acupuncture does NOT feel like getting a shot or having blood drawn.

Non-needle treatment is available, including stimulation of acupoints with laser light, mild electrical current, heat, suction, and/or pressure massage. These options are suitable for children and for individuals who are very afraid of needles.

Q: Is it safe?

A: When performed by a licensed professional, acupuncture is extremely safe.In the United States, acupuncturists use factory-sterilized, single-use,. disposable needles. The sterile needles are packaged according to strict guidelines and are discarded immediately after use, so there is no risk of contamination or disease transmission.

Q:Are the results psychological?

A:Some critics of acupuncture have suggested that its benefits are nothing more than the placebo effect or "mind over matter". This claim is disproved by research which has demonstrated that acupuncture is effective in the treatment of infants and small children, as well as dogs, horses, and other animals. You don't have to "believe" in acupuncture for it to help you (although a positive attitude never hurts!)
