Literacy
A person was treated literate in 1998 if he could read newspaper or a journal of same standard and could write a simple letter in any language. The literacy is measured as the ratio in percentage of literate population to corresponding population aged 10 or over the literacy ration in the district has increased from 18.7 percent in 1981 to 36.2 percent in 1998. The literacy ratio for males if 47.6 percent as against 23.4 percent for females. The ratio is much higher in urban where compared with rural areas both for male and females.

Enrolment Ratio
Enrolment ratio is the proportion, in percentage of students in population aged 5 to 24. the ration was 32.1 percent as measured from 1998 Census data with significant rural urban differential both for males and females. The remarkable differential is between females whose enrolment ration in urban areas was registered as 42.7 percent as against their ratio of 22.1 percent in rural areas and 36.9 percent of male ratio in district as a whole

Of the total educated persons 21.7 percent were below primary, 32.4 percent had passed primary 22.3 percent middle, 16.1 matriculate, 4.4 percent intermediate 2.0 percent graduates 0.6 percent post graduate while 0.3 percent were diploma /certificate holders. Regarding sex differentials males were more educated and had higher education than females. In urban areas of the district there were around 805 thousand graduates while in rural areas the level of education tapered off with higher level of education and hardly 6 to 7 thousand were found with graduates degree.
