And the more important is that people try to be updated with techonology, fashion and for also having a healthy life style-well being. Thanks to the well being industry, anti-smoking has hit Korea. As a result, tobacco companies have released low tar cigarette which contains 1 miligram. In addition, there is a definite change in fast food restaurants. On the menu they have so to call well being products on menu such as fresh salads, low-fat yogurt, fresh sandwiches and so on. And the writer of the article is also willing to develop his life by having little more pleasure. Also he says it's happy to know that there are many healthier options out there.

The Well-Being Mantra

By Tanya van Soest

The well-being trend has spread like wildfire in Korea. Everywhere you turn,a healthier, more peaceful lifestyle is being encouraged,
discussed pursued, and clearly revered by everyone, regardless of age, income or social orientation. Organic produce can be found in
most grocery stores, while restaurants _ including the fast-food variety _ cosmetic companies and even newly built apartment
complexes have all added some well-being element to what is on offer. Gyms offering yoga and Pilates classes designed to increase
the flow of ki and improve overall health are springing up everywhere while personal trainers increase their client list and raise their
prices. Even at the government level, the well-being mantra reverberates as President Roh Moo-hyun himself recently began using the term
in reference to the economy and his ambitious goal of achieving per capita income of $20,000. Well-being, a widespread concept and phrase
bursting with marketing, social and even campaign value, is everywhere in Korea these days.

Korea is home to unique societal behavior in that Koreans pick up on trends faster than any of their Asian neighbors, with trends
spreading across the peninsula at what appears to be lightning speed. This is partially due to the fact that Koreans simply pride
themselves on being fashionable, concept savvy and up to date with technology, but is also due to a large extent to the size of the country,
its population density and the highest per capita broadband usage in the world. Words and trends spread faster here than they do in Canada,
where Vancouverin the west can seem worlds apart in terms of whats hot and whats not when compared to Montreal in the east.

As a native of the latter of the two cities, one which prides itself for being a unique Canadian province filled with ``individuals defined
by a ``unique Quebecoise identity, while living in Korea I have on occasion found myself somewhat annoyed by the extent to which
people follow the leader, regurgitate the same ideas, chase the same carrot and wear the same clothes, but the well-being trend is one that,
however overdone or how annoying the mantra may become, is one that we could all benefit from following a little more closely.

Although Im not a believer in New Years resolutions, preferring to let life unfold as it will, I did make a commitment this year to embrace a more wholesome, balanced lifestyle. Nothing specific or complicated, no timeframe or method by which to measure my progress, but just a simple resolution to cut down on the things I know are bad for me, and increase the things that are good. However, I know myself too well to think I can cut out all things indulgent. Wouldnt that cause a lot of stress and ultimately be counterproductive to attaining a healthier lifestyle? My ideas of indulgence tend to come in the form of things to be consumed, such as dark, smooth chocolate, good, deep smoky red wine, Cuban cigarillos, French pastries, Italian sauces, espresso and cigarettes. The sweet pleasures and small indulgences are further enhanced by the fact that they are more often than not enjoyed in the presence of family, friends and lovers; celebrating life, love and laughter. The things that make my life feel a little richer, more sophisticated, and full of enjoyment are dear to me. I realize I am privileged to be able to enjoy them as often as I do and I hope I never have to live without any of them. However, too much of anything is not a good thing. Enough is a feast, my father always tells me, and of course hes right. Over indulgence can lead to discomfort, excess weight and a generally unhealthy lifestyle.

Thanks to all the companies and services making well-being options that much more accessible, pursuing a more balanced, less indulgent life has really become a no-brainer. To start with, as a result of the well-being trend and strong anti-smoking drive in Korea, tobacco companies have begun introducing 1 milligram low-tar varieties of cigarette, increasing consumer choice and visibly promoting lighter cigarettes. Noticing how more people prefer the 1 milligram low-tar products to their stronger counterparts, I thought I would also give them a try. My favorite brand of cigarettes for years has been Dunhill, made by British American Tobacco, the strong kind. But recently, when I visited a local newsstand to investigate the various low-tar options, I noticed that my favorite brand had begun producing not one but two new 1 milligram types: Dunhill 1 milligram and a menthol variety called Dunhill Frost. It being winter, and feeling especially ``fresh from my Pilates workout and two-hour visit to the local sauna, I decided to try the menthol variety, and besides, even the packaging looked fresh with its shiny light blue design. And with my purchase began a whole new smoking experience. With a light and clean tobacco taste but with a high-menthol flavor, it took amazingly little time to adjust, and after several weeks, Im already feeling the benefits of smoking a lighter cigarette, not just physically but mentally as well, for having taken yet another step towards a better, brighter me. Just the other day, faced with a mountain of work, a grumbling stomach and at least a fifteen minute walk from any decent restaurant, I decided for the first time in years to venture downstairs to the fast food restaurant chain on the corner and explore what they had in terms of healthy menu choices. Much to my surprise, there were fresh salads with chicken and balsamic dressing, healthy sandwiches and even a low-fat yogurt for dessert, complete with a nutritional pamphlet outlining such things as caloric, fat and protein content. Fantastic! After a five-minute wait, I was on my way back to work with a healthy, fast food meal in hand.

Im not expecting to turn my life around, loose twenty pounds or stop indulging in lifes little pleasures, but it is nice to know that there are healthier options out there, and this time around, even I am jumping on the bandwagon.

Well-Being Fad Hits Cell Phone Market

By Kim Tae-gyu

Staff Reporter Korean consumers' love affair with ``well-being, the latest health-kick buzzword, has broken into the cell phone industry with a raft of ``healthy phones flooding the market. The nation's major handset vendors already introduced mobile phones that enable health-conscious people to measure fat layers or blood-sugar levels and a killer sports-leisure phone is also due for late this month. Cell phones embedded with health-care functions are the hippest thing recently in the convergence trend, which breaks down conventional barriers between distinctive industries.

Experts including James Champy, who created the concept of business reengineering, support such trends, claiming the well-being fad can be well supported through cell phones in the future. ``In five years we will put all applications into cell phones. What is next? I think biological and health-related features will be future technologies. Companies should understand how the new fields will impact industries, he told a press conference in Seoul last month.

Brand-New Health-Care Phones Korea's major cell phone makers like Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Pantech and SK Teletech are embracing Champys advice that biotechnology is a star-in-the-making. Samsung, the world's third-largest handset producer, unveiled a new model, the SPH-E330, this month, which can measure the owner's fat level. After inputting one's name, weight and height, a touch of fingers on the measuring device is enough to know one's fat level. The phone also informs whether the measured fat level is normal or not. ``Although mobile health-care functions are still in their infancy now, cell phones will eventually evolve into an on-call health adviser for human beings with the development of convergence technologies,'' a Samsung spokesman said. Earlier in July, the world's fifth-biggest player LG released a diabetes phone, the LG-KP8400, for the first time in the world through an alliance with Healthpia, a health-related venture start-up.

The phone is equipped with a microchip, which can measure the human body's glucose, a sugar that comes from food. The high-end gear accumulates the measured data and delivers them to a doctor, thus enabling patients to get consultation and medical services without having to visit a hospital in person. The LG-KP8400 won steady popularity since its debut especially among diabetes patients, with monthly sales amounting to 300 to 400 units. ``We will further cater to the escalating demands for health-care models by presenting a stress phone which lets people to check their heart rate or a diet phone which can measure body fat, next year,'' an LG official said. SK Teletech, the handset-making affiliate of top mobile operator SK Telecom, took the wraps off its silver-nano phone, the IM-7700, in September. The silver-coated gizmo, which is believed to be effective in preventing the spread of germs, has already hit a home run with sales topping 100,000 in about two months.

Pantech, the nation's third-largest handset maker, will come out with a three-axis sensor phone, the PH-S6500, later this month. The brand-new model informs phone carriers of their speed, distance traveled and calorie consumption as well as altitude when climbing mountains. All these features are possible thanks to the built-in three-axis sensor, which tracks the location of cell phone holders around the clock as long as the power is on.
