| Thinking back, I still remember the day when I was only 13 years old. Being playful and ignorant, I was in a dilemma when I needed to choose a CCA for myself. After the 1998 CCA Orientation, I was impressed by the displays put up by the NCC (AIR) and distinguished blue uniform . As a result, I made my decision to join the Corps. Though my decision was made purely out of first impression, I certainly did not regret joining the Corps. Today, many of my good friends are actually my NCC buddies. Going through training and courses together bonded us not only in our training hours, but through our journey in life too. 11 August 2000 a day that changed my role in NCC. In the past, I had always thought that being a leader was an easy task. I was proven wrong when I was appointed Company Sergeant Major of the Second Batch of Cadets of St Gabriels NCC (Air) Unit. Being the leader of the unit, I was involved in both the planning and execution of plans. What most people see in a leader are the privileges they can get. But most are unaware that a leader has got more backstage work than meets the eye. Just take the example of a camp. What most cadets do before they attend a camp is simply the packing of their luggage. However, as a leader, I have got to take care of the activities, the food and equipment months before. Also after a long day of training, we are often the last to sleep as debriefs have always been conducted during the wee hours of the morning. Through my years in the Corps, I have learnt not only the syllabus required, but also many important values. One that I strongly believe is in to lead by example. I believe the best way to convince others is definitely not to preach but to show and lead. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Tuang Fook Yong. He is one man who has made a great difference in my life. Thank You Mr. Tuang!!! My five cents worth: NCC is not a game of individualism; there is no you can get fame through it. However, unselfishness and teamwork will definitely bring the unit forward. Do not follow where the path may lead. Go where there is no path and leave a trail. |
