It takes a certian amount of points to adance from each rank. Please keep in mind that all point promotions are minimums, and serve only to help give the skipper a guidline. They do not gaurentee promotion. Here is a rough rundown on this system.

~ Denotes that this rank is given only after the consent of the FSG Council A simmer is allowed 2 points for each quality post. No limit is given on the number of points or post you may do except they must be quality post. This rewards the more active simmers. A quality post meaning 3-5 paragraphs; minimum. Another way a simmer may make additional points is through submitting, having approved and executed a storyline. The amount of points given for a storyline should not exceed 4. In this case a story line has some important elements that should be present for additional points to be awarded. First off the story should encompass most or preferably all of the crew. Be sure there are things for everyone to do, otherwise it just isn't any good. Secondly, it should take time, this too is a subjective element. A third way for you to rack up the points is by making a bio. You can make from 1 to 5 points on a bio depending on how complete it is. Character pictures are a recommended to attain a five. Chain of CommandTo be determined when a crew of a fair size is established.
