Updates from Lorri Lee Lown -- Rider #2441
California AIDS Ride 8
Volume 1, Issue 4 May 1st, 2001
Just when I think I've seen all the generosity there is, someone surprises me with another donation, a larger donation, or a new donation. Thank you all for being incredible, caring, supportive friends. The success of the AIDS Ride is dependent not only on all the riders and crew who volunteer their time, but also on the generosity and support of the hundreds of thousands of donors who open their hearts and their wallets each year. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart!
Training News
Ride, ride, ride, ride, ride. This was a big month for miles, mostly due to my cycling vacation in New Zealand. In two weeks I logged almost 500 miles.

New Zealand is an absolutely beautiful country. During my tour, I rode on beaches, on the rim of a volcano, in the rain forest, through the mountains, and at the foot of several glaciers. And I climbed hills (mountains) that are higher than any I could ever imagine climbing. Many thanks to my Kiwi guide, Paul Lagan, who climbed many hills with me, including the three monsters between Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, and taught me lots of great climbing tips. There's no better way to really see all a country has to offer than on the saddle of a bicycle!

Hardcore cycling has begun in earnest (there goes my social life), with centuries scheduled every weekend since I returned. The toughest (and my personal slowest century) was the Primavera Century, sponsored by the Fremont Freewheelers. 4,800 feet of climbing (all hills) and it seemed like we had a headwind every direction we rode. But I had the pleasure of riding with one of my sponsors and Schwab colleagues, Rodney Paul and his wife, Sarah, on their monster tandem.
Fundraising News
Since I wasn't here during much of April, most of the pledges I received were surprises to me. I love surprises! To date, I've raised $13,805 to benefit the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. But, unless I get some really big surprises, it doesn't look like I'll hit my fundraising goal of $25,000, although I think it's safe to say that I'll raise at least $15,000.

The Blonde Biker Chicks My Schwab teammates Caitlin Darke, Imelda McGovern and I held a fundraising party on April 26th at the Triangle Lounge in San Francisco. Lots of fun (even though I was sick as a dog), and I collected more than $400 in pledges that night. The highlight of the night was the bike raffle.
Thanks to Caitlin selling tickets to everyone who walked in the door, we raised more than $600. The winner was the bartender, and I have to say he looked absolutely adorable riding the pretty pink bike around the dance floor.

Team Schwab
Well, today was a bittersweet day for all of us at Schwab. Although we knew the company would be reducing workforce due to slow market volumes, it's never easy to prepare for this. I was one of 2,300 employees laid off today, along with at least 6 other members of our team. So, now I have absolutely no excuse not to be in prime condition for the AIDS Ride, since I can workout and ride everyday!

our new team logo I still plan to ride with Team Schwab, and will do everything I can to support the team in the coming month. My thanks go out to all my wonderful Team Schwab friends who called and emailed, telling me just what an impact I'd made as captain this past year or so. I love you all!
It's funny, because lots of folks have asked if I'll still wear the team uniform. I'll wear it proudly. I love Schwab and the opportunities I've had there during the past two years, and I'm extremely proud to be part of a team that's made such a huge impact on the AIDS Ride. Last year, we raised almost half a million dollars for the California AIDS Ride, and this year we should raise at least that much. I'm very proud to be part of that effort!
The Road Ahead
As I wrote this, I wondered how I'd ever get on the bike again. I got a nasty cold last week, and in addition to the fever, dizziness, and cough, I had this incredible pain in my lower back. I think it's from coughing, and since my abs were sore from working out earlier in the week, the opposing muscle group in my lower back took the brunt of it. Ouch! This weekend I couldn't even bend over, never mind put my body on my bike.

Hopefully, I'll feel better by next weekend, because I've got two awesome rides planned, the Wine Country Century in Santa Rosa, and the Napa Tour de Cure. This will be my first weekend of back-to-back centuries -- 100 miles each day! I'm not feeling particularly ready for it right now, but I can't wait all the same. The rest of May will be filled with other centuries and organized rides, and maybe even a little play time for Memorial Day weekend.
And most importantly ........thank you again to everyone who's supporting me for the AIDS Ride this year. And a special thanks those of you who sponsored me last year too (denoted with an *). You should each be proud knowing that your donation is making a significant difference in providing vital services to those living with HIV and AIDS.
