The CAR8 Challenge

Updates from Lorri Lee Lown -- Rider #2441
California AIDS Ride 8
Volume 1, Issue 1 February 1st, 2001

First, my thanks to all of you for supporting me in my challenge to raise $25,000. I'll admit, the task still seems a little daunting, but I'm confident that, with a little creativity and a lot of effort, I'll reach my goal by June 3rd.

Training News

Many of you know, I hadnt been on my bike since August. I had a little accident on August 28th, while riding in the Napa Century. At mile 45, after not feeling well for the first half of the ride, I passed out entering the pit stop. Seems I was a little dehydrated. Combining that with a bout of pneumonia in October, somehow I found myself in January without having ridden in four months.

My first ride was with my Don McAdang, another veteran Schwab rider. We left from his house in San Francisco and planned to do the beautiful Tiburon loop (45 somewhat hilly miles). We made it to Sausalito, decided to stop for lunch, and decided to take the ferry back to San Francisco. Okay, not the most challenging ride, but at least we both got back on the bikes (Don hadnt ridden since closing ceremonies of CAR7 in June, 2000).

Team Schwab at the Pulgas Water Temple The following weekend, I rode a total of 150 miles in four days, including a Team Schwab ride I hosted at my house. 3 new riders, 3 veterans, and lots of fun! My final ride of the weekend was a solo 45-mile ride. Feeling good now! Maybe I havent totally lost it.

Then I came down with the dreaded "cold" everyone in San Francisco seemed to have. Knocked me out for a total of 14 days, just when I was getting back into the routine. But I'm happy to report that I'm back on my bike & riding like the wind!

Fundraising News

Since Team Schwab is going to raise $1 million, I decided I should make a real effort with my fundraising this year. Last year, I raised almost $7,000 without even trying. So this year, I've decided to set a goal of $25,000.

So far, Ive sent out several hundred fundraising cards, letters, and emails. I didnt realize I knew so many people, but I pulled out my really old address books and started mailing! Its be great reconnecting with old friends Id lost touch with. To date, thanks to all of you, Ive raised $4,010. Still a long way to go, but Ive still got some really neat fundraising ideas up my sleeve.

Team Schwab

We held our first full team meeting at the end of January, and Im so proud and excited to be a part of Team Schwab. Were a beautiful, diverse group ranging in age from 20-60, every size, color, gender (okay, only two there), background. Very representative of Schwab as a company. The excitement of the team is just electric! Lots of new riders this year, and Im doing everything I can to help and support them. And our new uniforms are awesome!

On the Horizon

February promises to be a great month. Im really going to up my miles & get back into the gym to lift weights and take spinning class (helps on the hills). Ive also started commuting by bike again this year. We've got a number of Team Schwab training rides planned, and I'm really looking forward to getting to know the new team members.

And most importantly.....thank you to all my donors. I really appreciate your sponsorship and your personal notes have been such an inspiration to me. Your support is invaluable to the San Francisco AIDS Foundation
