History

During the volcanic eruptions shortly after the settlers of Pern first landed, it was agreed that the settlers would move to the northern continent, unwilling to deal with the harsh lay of the land. (Note: AIVAS was destroyed during these eruptions.) Fort Weyr was established in the North, and several other Weyrs came after that, including Telgar, Igen, Ista, and High Reaches. Holds sprang up all across Pern, and the Crafthall system was created.

The Weyrs and Holds thrived across Pern, and during the sixth interval, the Weyrleaders of Benden and Fort Weyr realized a new Weyr would have to be created to contain the dragon population. Two queens from High Reaches and two queens from Fort, as well as several hundred dragonriders, were moved to Skybroom Weyr, located on the Keroon plain. Skilana and gold Kimarith became Weyrwoman of the new Weyr when Kimarith rose first and was flown by bronze Takatylth, ridden by R'stamin.

Skybroom flourished and grew. However, Skilana was a very traditional woman. While few new or innovative ideas were introduced at Skybroom, and while the other Weyrs developed and matured, Skybroom remained traditional. The other Weyrs had a distaste for the hidebound leadership of Skybroom, and, ever after Skilana's retirement, the next Weyrleaders remained traditional indeed.

Two hundred turns later, Besslyn and golden Auroroth became the Weyrwoman of Skybroom Weyr, flown by J'ran's bronze Rosaleth. Two other goldriders were stationed at Skybroom - Weyrwoman's Second Fiyakana and golden Ilianyth and Weyrling Goldrider Esaveau and Xiralth. Besslyn, not surprisingly, followed in the footsteps of Skybroom's previous Weyrleaders; she was traditional, hidebound, and followed all the customs that had been upheld throughout Skybroom's Turns of existence.

Fiyakana had been transferred to Skybroom from Igen Weyr shortly following Auroroth's flight. She couldn't believe the stuffiness of the Weyrleaders, nor could she tolerate their stuck up attitudes. Knowing that she couldn't tolerate Besslyn for very long, she began an underground campaign. Speaking with Weyrleaders from the other Weyrs, it was agreed that she and an entourage of other dragons would move to the Southern Continent to explore the region and create a new Weyr.

When Fiyakana announced her decision to move South to Besslyn, the Weyrwoman was furious. She and Fiyakana had never gotten along, but Besslyn couldn't tolerate any rebellion in her ranks. Knowing the graceful way to bow of a sticky situation, Besslyn gave Fiyakana her permission to form a new Weyr and agreed to allow a few hundred Skybroom riders to relocate with Fiyakana and Ilianyth. After being pressed by the Weyrleaders of Fort, she also agreed to supply Fiyakana's Weyr with necessary supplies, since there were no Holds in the South to tithe to the Weyr.

The riders relocated to the South, and Falling Skies Weyr was created. Ilianyth was flown by K'yo and bronze Muireadath. They kept communications open between Skybroom; Fiyakana and Besslyn did not get along, but they did respect each other, and helping each other out seemed like the logical thing to do.

That winter, two new Holds with sufficient crafterst to begin new Halls were established: Blue Dragon Sea Hold on the coast and FireDawn Hold farther inland.

The following summer, Esaveau transferred out, and Nailyra, gold Ghanath's rider, was broght in to take her place as Besslyn's second. She was a welcome and capable replacement.

At the end of that Turn, Fiyakana fell ill and was forced to step down. Two new goldriders were transferred in, Shelawn and gold Tribeth and Lariren with gold Celadrielith. Shortly afterward, K'yo chose to transfer out. Lariren became Weyrwoman when Celadrielith rose first and was caught by Kahreth, making B'lor Weyrleader.

Not long after, in early spring, an earthquake shook Falling Skies, partially destroying it. Over the next few days, as the lake filled with sulphur, the lower caverns flooded, and the sands became too hot for Celadrielith's eggs, the hard decision was made to evacuate to Skybroom Weyr. Not all riders were willing to make the move, and some were injured or killed when the ancient volcano erupted. A new location will have to be found for Falling Skies, probably after Celadrielith's eggs hatch.

Skybroom Weyr underwent a change of Weyrleadership when bronze Eristath flew Auroroth in a mating flight, making D'mez Weyrleader and replacing the injured J'ran. V'til and Kabalth were the next to have a turn at Weyrleadership before D'mez and Eristath reclaimed the position yet again, and have held it for two successive turns.

Falling Skies Weyr has also faced changes, as Lariren and Celadrielith were lost. Selvi and Tolorth took their place, along with two new jr. goldriders. D'gion and Therdeth have proven themselves as leaders by repeatedly winning Tolorth's flights.

Thread's return brought with it new challanges even as the old rivalries are left behind - to a certain point. Now, can Falling Skies weather the strain of a Weyrwoman and Weyrleader who do not get along?
