(to get attention) ano toki - "that time", "back there", "back then", etc. ao - blue ao-oni - blue ogre ara/are - (ah-rah/ah-reh) Huh? (ara: female, are: male) *ara-mitama � courage are/sore/kore/dore - "this" when referring to objects. see "ano/sono/kono/dono" arigatou - thank you arigatou gozaimasu - thank you very much (formal) arimasen/imasen - isn't arimashita" - was, were asa - morning asagohan - breakfast Ashisogijizou � limb paralyzer ashita - tomorrow ashita no ban - that sounds good (tomorrow?) asi - foot asoko/soko/koko/doko - means "this" when referring to locations. in order: "there" (far away), "there", "here", "where?"; both "doko wa" and "koko wa" can translate as "where am I?" (literally "where is this place?") As, soo desu ka. - Oh, I see. atama - head atarashii - new atashi/watashi - me (female version) atsui - hot (temperature or weather) ayame - iris Ayamezuki - "month of irises", Japanese month for June azuki beans - sweet red beans used in desserts throughout Asia B babaa - old hag; rude term for an old woman baigon - solemn ume baka - idiot/stupid/moron (insult) bakaga - impossible bakari - only bakemono - monster bancho - stereotypical Japanese delinquent (1970s term) bangohan - dinner/meal Bankai - ban means "complete" and kai means "release"; complete release benihikou - crimson flight/crimson locust bento - a box lunch betsu ni - a multi-purpose negative phrase, usually translated as "nothing" or "not really" bijuu - tailed beasts bishoujo - pretty girl bishounen - pretty boy bocchan - "young master" bokken - wooden sword boku - me/I (used by males and pretty informal) bouzo � insulting term for a monk bushi � can be a suffix (Ryuu-bushi); title given to samurai and other honorable warriors bushido - the "warrior's code", or code of honor among samurai. One of the main rules of Bushido seems to be "death before dishonor" busu - ugly girl (rude insult) byoki desu - I'm sick byoyomi - literally "second counting" [term used in shogi] C che - darn chibi - little, small chichi-gimi � a very old and respectful way of saying �father� (ie: the way Sesshoumaru addresses his father in Inuyasha) chichi-oya - father (not in his presence) chichi-ue-sama - old, respectful term for "father" chikyuu - Earth (planet) chigau - different (can also be used as "no" as in "no, it's something different" or "that's wrong". The verb form is "chigaimasu" ("to be different/wrong") chiisai - small (as in "small in size"; I've also heard the variation "chisana", which may be the noun version, I'm not 100% sure on that.) chiisai - small chikara - force/strength chikuba - old friend chikubi - nipple [hehe got that from a Naruto episode] chikuso - damn it chinamida - blood tears chotto - a little chotto matte - "wait a minute!" choukokutou � chisel for art sculptures chouwa - harmony chuu-gakkou - middle school Chuunin - also, "Chunin"; literally "middle ninja" or "journeyman ninja" D da/no da - positive emphasis daga - however/but dai fugo - very rich man (like the Japanese card game) dai hin min - very poor man (like the Japanese card game) daijoubu - in question form it means, "Are you ok?". Just said out as a statement means "I'm fine." daikon - large Japanese radish daimyo - fuedal lord; these people were the next rank above samurai in Japan's fuedal era and were the major landowners. daisho - traditional pair of swords carried by samurai, consisting of a katana (long sword) and wakizashi (short sword) daisuki desu/da - I love you. This has more emphasis than "suki desu/da" which means "I love you/I like you" (this refers to boyfriend/girlfriend type love, not romantic marraige-type love). "daisuki" can also describe your favorite things. dakara - so, therefore damare - "be quiet", "shut up!", "silence!" dame - bad, no good dango - dumplings of mochi (a chewy dough made of rice flour) dare - who? datte - but; however; still dattebayo - [from Naruto] no actual meaning; it's just tagged on to Naruto's sentences, like his own sort of dialect. Naruto's style is '(verb stem)tte bayo!' For instance, wakattebayo is "I get it already" or nan dattebayo is "What (the heck) is that?" densetsu - legend demo - but densetsu - legend, legendary denwa - telephone deshi - apprentice desu - polite modifier, more casual form of "de gozaimasu" dewa - an interjection, has various meanings including "Then...", "Well...", "Now..." etc. dim sum - pork buns (Chinese dish) dfo itashi mashite - you're welcome dobe - "dead last" or loser doitashimashite - you�re welcome (retort for thank you) do-iu koto da - "what do you mean?" dojo - school (maritial arts training hall) doki doki - "sometimes/from time to time"; also describes a heartbeat dokkasou - toxic flower claw [Sesshoumaru's poison claws in Inuyasha] doko - where? G ga - In comics and such gahan - rice/cooked meal gaijin - foreigner gakkou - school/high school gakkousei - student gambare - be brave gambatte ne! - "do your best!" gekiga - adult audience genki - energy genki da - cheer up, be well, take care, etc. ganmou - wish Genin - literally, "low ninja" or "junior ninja" genjutsu - illusionary techniques genki - energy, healthy, happy, entergetic genzai - past geta - wooden sandals Getsugakure - Village Hidden Under the Moon Getsua Tenshou � "lunar fang heaven shock"; Ichigo's bankai attack gi - short men's kimono gigai - artificial body gikon � artificial spirit ginrei kojaku � lone sparrow on a silver cliff ginzuishou - silver crystal gochisousama! - said at the end of mealtimes, means "thank you for the meal/I'm finished" godaikoku � 5 great countries [in Naruto: Konoha, Suna, etc] Godaime - literally, the Fifth [in Naruto, the Fifth Hokage/Kazekage/etc] gokuraku-chou � paradise birds goshujin - your gomen - I'm sorry gomen nasai - "I'm very sorry" or "excuse me" (pardon me) gyouza - dumpling H ha - the cutting edge of a sword haha-oya - mother (not in her presence) haha-ue-sama - very old and polite term for "mother" hai - yeah, yes, ok "Hai, genki desu" - I am fine Hai, sukoshi hanashimasu. - Yes, I speak a little (language-wise). hajime - beginning, start, the first time, etc. hajimemashite - "I'm pleased to meet you (for the first time)" hajimeru - to begin hakama - skirt pants hakubaikou - white plum (the scent and the flower) hakuda - bare-hand military combat han - half hana - there are a few meanings for this, including "flower" and "nose" hanabi - Japanese fireworks, literally "flowers of fire" hanare - a detached room, like a guest house hanase - imperative form of "to release", it often translates as "release me!" or "let me go!"; the dictionary form is "hanasu" hanashi - as a noun it means "news, account, story", etc. The dictionary from of the verb "to talk" is "hanasu"; "hanasu also means "to release" (see above) hane - spring (season) hanten - jacket Hanyou - (Han-yoh) Han = half, You = demon. Iwagakure - Village Hidden Among Rocks J ja [ne/na] - see you later/see you then ja matta/mattana - casual "goodbye" janken - the Japanese version of "rock, paper, scissors"; the phrase is "Janken, Janken, Pon!" jibun - one's self, yourself/himself/herself jigoku - hell jijii - rude term for an old man jikai - next time jinchuu - Earthly justice or revenge Jinchuuriki � means Power of Human Sacrifice; they�re hosts for the tailed demons in Naruto; not a direct translation, as it is a word made up simply for Naruto, but there are roots to real Japanese words jitsu wa - "actually..." Jonin - also "jounin" and "jouunin"; literally "high ninja" or "elite ninja" jou-chan - "little missy" joudan janai - "this is no joke!" or "you've got to be kidding!", etc. jourou - noble-woman, usually translated to "mistress" jousho - emotion/feeling jutsu - technique, art Juunishi - Japanese version of the Chinese Zodiac; literally "the members of the zodiac" K ka - a particle that indicates a question kage - shadow kagi - key Kagurazuki - "month of Shinto song and dance", Japanese month for December kai - sea or ocean kaima - sea monster kaimyou � a new name created by Buddhist priests for a recently departed person kaite kudasai - please write it kaji - fire kakeru - to fly kakkoii - cool kako - present kamaitachi - refers to things that cut without touching Kami - God, or commonly the Shinto god, as it is the main Japanese religion. Kami-Sama would be talking about god, or some very high ranking person, such as an emperor. kami (not capitalized or with formality suffixes) - paper kamikakushi - spirited away; literally "hidden by deities" [as in people vanishing: missing persons] kaminoke - hair kamiya - flower (rough translation) kanai - wife ho kanji - perception, feeling. In the Meji era a "mon" was also a form a currency that was worth less than a "sen". monja-yaki - a pan-fried pancake of mixed vegetables and meat, similar to okonomiyaki, only without the eggs mono - person mononoke - vengeful spirit; evil spirit mooto - increases the amount of something. An example is "hayaku, hayaku, mooto hayaku" (a phrase from a Spirited Away image song) which means "faster, faster and faster" but "mooto" doesn't mean "and"; it's simply increasing the amount of "hayaku" mori - forest moshi moshi - hello (on the phone) motto - more/further mou - sign of exasperation, like sighing mou ii - "no more" or "that's enough!" moussaka - lasagna with fried eggplant slices instead of pasta Muk Yan Jong - wooden training log [google-image it to see what it looks like; commonly used in Naruto] mune - heart or the dull edge of a sword murasaki iro - purple mushi - insect musume - daughter (in Rurouni Kenshin "itachi musume" = "weasel girl" or literally the daughter of a weasel. Obviously in this case it's being used as in insult) muzukashii - difficult myuun - the sound a cat makes; they also make a "nyaa nyaa" sound N nabe - hot pot; stew nagashi soumen - a type of noodle that is served in a bamboo flume; as the noodles flow down the flume, diners pick them out with chopsticks nanda yo - slang for "what is it?" nani - what? nani mo - nothing Nan-ji desu ka? - What time is it? nanushi-sama � village head naruto � steamed fish-paste cake sliced to decorate soup Natsuhiboshi � Summer Fire Star [Mars] natto - fermented soybean paste that's really sticky and stinky naze desu ka - why? ne - no real definition, but it's like saying "huh?" or "eh?" after saying a statement; a sort of rhetorical question ne - roots negashion � negative aster negi - welsh onion/leek neko - cat Nidaime - literally, the Second [in Naruto, the Second Hokage/Kazekage/etc] *nigi-mitama � kinship nira-tama - a dish with leeks and egg nimono - stewed/boiled foods nindo - literally, "way of the ninja" ningen - human ningyou - doll [also "living doll"] ninjutsu - also called "shinobi no jutsu"; literally "concealing arts"; in Naruto, the usage of hand-signals and jutsus in general; in reality, traditional fighting arts associated with the Iga/Koga region of Japan ninmenka � human-head fruit nintoujou - human head staff [Jaken's staff in Inuyasha] nishin soba - herring noodles no - "of" or "of the"; used mostly to make things sound better [ie: Shikon no Tama = Jewel of Four Souls; Sabaku no Gaara = Gaara of the Sand] nunchaku - kind of like nunchucks O obaba - granny; "baa" for short (baa-chan, baa-san, etc) oba-san - aunt; also used towards young women who are like family; respected term for an older woman obi - sash ocha - green tea Odakaritsuki - "rice harvest month", Japanese month for September odango - balls of sweetened rice flour; also the bun-like hairstyle of Sailor Moon/Serena ofuda - paper charms used to ward off evil ofukuro - rude slang for "mother" okashira � village head O genki desu ka? - How are you? ohagi - sweet bean paste ohayo - good morning ohisashiburi - used when greeting someone you haven't seen in a while; "it's been a long time" ohkii - large oi! - hey! Ichigo and his friends were ryoka when they entered Soul Society. ryou - an ancient form of currency from pre-Meiji Japan. 3 million ryou is 3 billion US dollars in modern currency. also the currency used in Naruto.
