Mustard may be used as a condiment. In Nagoya, miso is used as a dipping sauce. In Kansai, it may be called Kanto ni or Kanto daki, both literally Kanto stew, because Oden originated in the Kanto area. It is usually served over rice. ![]() ohagi - sweet bean paste; a rice cake covered with bean jam, soybean flour, or ground sesame okonomiyaki - a vegetable griddlecake; meat or seafood in a vegetable pancake. The basic ingredients are cabbage, flour and eggs, and the rest depends on your okonomi, that is, "your taste". Shrimp and squid are popular additions, and when it's all done, you top it off with thick sauce, aonori and bonito flakes. ![]() onigiri - rice ball ![]() oshiruko � red bean soup ![]() ramen - a popular noodle soup dish ![]() ringo-ame - an apple on a stick dipped into liquid candy that hardens as it cools until it resembles lollipop candy; kind of like a caramel apple except with lollipop candy-coating ![]() sashimi - raw fish; sushi can be raw fish or sometimes it has no raw fish; sushi is actually more talking about the vinegared rice so if you want to specifically mean "raw fish" its good to use "sashimi" ![]() shiokara - salted fish guts shougayaki - pork fried with ginger ![]() shungiku - Chrysanthemum leaves ![]() soba - buckwheat noodles (resembling spaghetti) served in a soy-flavored, or sometimes clear, broth made from fish and seaweed ![]() soumen - noodles ![]() sushi - mostly raw fish and rice wrapped in seaweed, with some exceptions ![]() taiyaki - fish-shaped pancakes filled with azuki bean paste ![]() takoyaki - dumplings made with bits of octopus meat teriyaki - food covered in sweet soy sauce ![]() tempura - batter-fried vegetables and seafood ![]() tonkatsu - breaded pork cutlet ![]() tonkoro ten � transparent noodles eaten together with black honey and vinegar tororo soba - grated yam noodles ![]() tsukemen � dipping noodles, the soup and noodles are served separately ![]() ume konbu - plum and seaweed ![]() umeboshi - the Japanese plum fruit; sour and seldom eaten raw wagarashi - hot mustard; used as a dressing ![]() wasabi - condiment for sushi, sashimi and chilled soba noodles ![]() yaki-imo - baked sweet potatoes often sold by street vendors in Japan during autumn.
