The
Tucson metropolitan area is home to about 750,000 people. That makes for
a nice-sized labor force from which to draw. It also makes Tucson attractive
to businesses considering moving to the sun belt. What makes Tucson even more attractive is the fact that our work force averages from $7,000 to $10,000 per year less than our neighbors up the road in Babylonia (Phoenix). This makes Tucson and the Greater Tucson Economic Council (GTEC) eager to bring in businesses to "give its citizens jobs." Our biggest employers are the military (Davis-Monthan Air Force Base and Fort Huachuca to the southeast), government (federal, state, county, city, and various townships), defense industry (Raytheon), and education (the University of Arizona). Our second biggest industry is phone centers (cheap labor comes in handy for manning call centers for the likes of Intuit, AOL, several of the airlines and others). In other words, it's a great place to have a small business and from which to telecommute. |
