I watch too much television.

Actually, that's not as true as it was. I watch less television these days than I used to, and I'm much more discerning. But even so, I have watched too much and am rather ashamed of the fact that I know as much as I do.

Although I'm not as harsh a critic as some.

Still, there have been the occasional show that really stood out. ER for one. Friend, for another, used to have something (until I realised it was something febrile that I didn't want to share). And I still watch Fraiser and South Park.

But for my money, only three shows in recent years have stood out as having something extra that made them worthwhile:

• Buffy the Vampire Slayer (warning: contains major spoilers)

• Ultraviolet

• The Simpsons

Everything else is just TV.

But still, I like it.
