Sci-Fi Geek

Someone recently wrote a review of one of my short stories in which he described the author's voice as "swamped by commonplaces inspired...by contemporary horror and fantasy novels in colourful covers."

Which made me smile. And not in a good way.

Because it annoys me when so many people dismiss horror, fantasy and sci-fi novels simply for being works of this type, where the only thing worth mentioning about them is that they have colourful covers.

Yes, there is a lot of dross out there on the sci-fi/fantasy scene. That's why I don't read as much sci-fi/fantasy as I should, despite being a fan.

But that's also true of any other genre of writing. I mean, look at Jeffery Archer or Jilly Cooper.

And like any other genre, there are some people to be recommended.
